IMPROVEMENT IN- VAPOR-BATHS.

Specification forining part of Letters Patent No. )133,575, dated December 3, 1872. i

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WARREN EsTABRooK and SAMUEL J. McDoNALD, of Gallatin, in the county of Daviess and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Vapor-Bath, of which the following is a specification:

My inventionis an improvement in the class of vapor-bath apparatus in which the case employed is provided with a top and side adapted to open to receive the patient, and with a perforated seat and a vaporizing-furnace; and the invention consists in the arrangement of heat fenders or screens with relation to a seat and foot-support, and of areceptaclefor containing a furnace, the same being provided with a sliding cover, whereby the intensity of the furnace-tire may be lessened or inclosed so as to exclude the air and extinguish it, &c., as hereinafter set forth.

A represents a case, of Wood or other suitable material, of suitable size for a person of large size to sit in on the seat B and have the neck project through the hole c in the top, the said seat, which is adjustable vertically to adapt the apparatus for persons of diiferent size, being let down to the lower limit of its range. The part D of the top is jointed to the other part, E, in the lines F, and\.hinged at G; and the corresponding part of the side H of the case is connected tothe said part D of the top, and also hinged in the axis Gr so to admit the patient and close him inc x around the neck, as aforesaid. The a seat B is perforated to aiford the b .i tion of the vapor. It is made ad the hook-headed bars I passing y slotted plates K attached to the 1 l notched bars N for holding the lower end. O represents perforated foot-rests, under which the vapor is allowed to pass to rise up against the legs.

P is a sheet-metal screen under the seat for protecting the patient from too much heat, and Q represents screens for protecting R is a cup or dish of any suitable kind, supported over the tire, which will be in furnace S, by a crane, T, which is supported in a vertical socket, U, on the inner end of the metal case V, which contains the fire-pot or furnace S, and is arranged to slide into the case A through a hole in the side L at the bottom, containing an extinguishing slide or gate, W, for sliding in over the tire-pot for eX- tinguishing the fire when required. Said case is provided with ilanges a; at the outer end for overlapping the joint at the opening in wall L, through which it is admitted to prevent the admission of too much air. Y is the exhaustpipe.- It is provided with a damper, Z, to regulate the escape of the vapor.

Solid-or liquid substances to be burned for medicating will be placed in the furnace S, or any other equivalent or suitable one in its stead; and liquids or other substances to be vaporized by low heat will be placed in the basin R above, to be heated by fire in the furnace.

The case V is arranged to slide out and in case A for convenience in attending the iire and arranging the medicating substances.

Having thus described our invention, we

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The arrangement, within the case A, of the concavo-convex screen P and screen Q sup'- porting the same, in relation to the perforated seat B and/foot-rest O, as set forth.

2. The,.'sliding case V provided with the slide W, whereby the furnace S may be come `pletely inclosed so as to be withdrawn fromthe case A or left therein, as occasion may require, as set forth.
