UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
ROBERT THOMPSON, 0F BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,550, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. THOMPSON, of Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification: A I
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of chairs or seats; and consists in so constructing the legs or supports of the seat as that the latter may be adjusted to any required height from the floor and thereby be made to conform to the various statures of children and others using the seats or chairs.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved chair; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the chair-standard, showing mechanism for adjustment.
A represents the chair or seat, provided with a back, a, of the usual or, it may be, of any convenient form desired. The chair is supported by the adjustable legs (J and a hollow cylindrical Or flat-sided pillar, B, which is provided with a flat bearing-flange, b, to which the seatbottom is secured. It is also formed with vertical slots b extending from the bottom to near the top of the pillar. The adjustable legs 0 are provided with flat plates 0 having projecting tongues c, which are inserted into the slots 1) of the pillar, so that the legs can slide up and down on the pillar to adjust the height of the seat. D is an annular stay-plate placed inside of the pillar B, to which the legs are secured by bolts d which pass through the legplates 0 and slots 1) of the pillar. By loosening these boltsd the legs can be adjusted up or down, and by again tightening up, the seatis secured in the desired position. E is a brace extending from the pillar B to the back of the seatfor the purpose of strengthening the chair.
This device can be applied with beneficial results to a variety of chairs and seats, but is intended more particularly for use in schools, where a uniform height of seats is unsuited to .varying heights of the children.
What I claim as my invention is The seat or chair A, in combination with a slotted pillar, B, and adjustable legs 0, plate D, and bolts d, constructed and operated in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
