Be it known that I, HARRY F. BLOOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful 'Vacuum Oil-Cup, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lubricating devices, and more particularly to an improved oil cup, adapted to be operated for feeding the oil, by suction or vacuum.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified structure of oil cup, in which the oil is fed only as long as the element to which it supplies lubrication, is rotating, it being understood that the device is particularly adapted for use, in connectionwith rotating parts, of machinery, automobiles or the like, and so constructed as to permit minute regulation of the supply of lubrication to the part in question, so that a drop or two may be distributed each minute or so with economy.
A further object of the invention is to provide an oil cup which is designed to prevent filling or splashing of the contents of the cup, and which is not only simple in construction, economical to produce, but which is strong and durable in'use, not likely to get out of working order.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

lar formation and provided with a relatively large opening 11 at the bottom thereof, and a smaller opening 12 at the top thereof around which is provided an externally threaded rim 13, for the engagement of the cap 14 thereon. The cap is internally threaded, being provided with a flange for this purpose, and having arranged on its under surface, an inverted relatively flat cone 15 forming a distributer as will be hereinafter more particularly specified. This cone may be suitably supported in position, and is shown secured to the cap as by means of a screw or other suitable fastening means 16, so that the cone will 00- cupy the complete bottom face of the cap withapex extending axially of the cup.
The opening 11 is internally threaded, to receive the external threads of the enlarged or flared upper end of a bottom section 17, which is provided with a wrench engaging portion 18 and a reduced externally threaded portion 19 therebeneath. The interior bore of the section 17 is formed with a shoulder 20 below which it is internally threaded as shown at 21 and below the threads 21, which are of reduced diameter with respect to the shoulder 20, there is formed. a tapered seat 22 havinga central escape opening 23. Fitted in the shoulder 20 is the reduced lower end of a tube24c, the reduced portion being indicated at 25 and snugly provided in the shoulder 20, while the upper end of the tube is provided with a funnel-shaped portion 25 having a series, preferably for radial passages or openings 26 intermediately of the top and bottom edges thereof, that is, between the top edge and the bottom edge of the conical or funnel-shaped portion which joins with the tube 2 1, while the openings 26 extend to the right angles of the tube and are connected at their outer ends by oppositely inclined oil grooves 27 formed in the peripheral face of the funnel 25 so that an oil deposited therein will pass through said openings andinto the tube.
Engaged to the tube is a valve stem 28, the lower portion of which is externally threaded as shown at 29 to engage the threads 21, while the end thereof is provided with a tapered engaging head 30 cooperating with the seat 22. The upper end of the stem is formed with reduced portions, preferably, as indicated at 31 and between said reduced portion providing an enlarged tween the parts to be lubricated.
globular head portion 32, above which is provided a relative flat circular head 33 larger than the head The head or globular enlargement 32 is designed to cooperate with a seat 33 formed upon the inner face of the funnel 25, so by adjusting the valve stem 28 through the medium of its threaded portion 29, the space between the enlargement 32 and the seat 33 can be regulated to feed the proper quantity of oil to the valve, for escape through the aperture or opening 33, controlled by the tapered or needle valve 30. The oil feeds between the stem 28 and the tube 24, owing to the stem fitting loosely within the tube, supported by the threads 29 as previously described, and the threaded portion is further provided with diametrically disposed vertical grooves extending axially of the stem, as indicated at 34L and extending into the main portion of the stem, so as to receive the oil and effectively distribute the same to the tapered end 30, for discharge through the opening 23 as previously described.
' In the use of the device, oil is placed within the cup 10 and in splashing, as applied to the part to be lubricated will strike the collecting element or-cone 15, and drop on to the enlargements 32 and 33 or to the funnel 25; The oil will then run down into the tube 24 and around the stem 28 to be discharged through the grooves Stand the opening 23. The cooperation of the enlargement 32 with the seat 33 and of the needle valve with its seat, permits a very minute regulation of the distribution of the oil, so that it will only feed when drawn through by suction or vacuum created be- Thus, the oil can be regulated to feed but a drop or two a minute, depending upon the amount of lubrication required in the .particular instance, thereby economizing in the use of lubrication.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a vacuum oil cup, a cup for containing oil, having a discharge opening and valve seat around said opening, a feed tube leading to said seat and opening, and provided with a flaring upper end, a valve cooperating with said seat and having a stem provided with enlargements adapted to discharge oil into said flaring upper end and a cap for said cup.
2. In a vacuum oil cup, a cup for containing oil, having a discharge opening and valve seat around said opening, a seat tube leading to said seat and opening, and provided with a flaring upper end, a valve c0- operating with said seat and an enlarge ment at the upper end thereof of globular formation, said enlargement cooperating with said flared portion to control the escape of oil therethrough from the cup, said flared portion providing a restricted opening betwcenit and the interior wall of the cup through which the oil is designed to be splashed for discharge on to said enlargement and into the flared portion of the tube, said tube being formed with a passage between it and the stem of the valve, and a cap for the cup having an inverted conical bottom portion constituting a distributer.
3. An oil cup comprising a cup-shaped body, a cap removably secured thereto and provided with a conical bottom portion with the apex thereof extending axially of the cup, a detachable member secured in the bottom of the cup and provided with a wrench engaging portion and external at- -taching threads, the interior of the detachable portion being provided with a shoulder, and internal threads therebeneath, and a valve seat at the bottom provided with an outlet aperture at the center, a tube having its lower end fitting in said shoulder and having a funnel-shaped upper end provided with a series of. radial passages therethrough and oppositely inclined grooves upon its outer face extending between said passages, a valve stem extending into and through said tube and providing a passage between the same, the lower end of the'stem being threaded for engagement with the threads ofjthe detachable section andihaving a tapered end portion cooperating with said seat, said stem having vertical grooves extending into the threaded portion and formed with spaced enlargements at its upper end, and a seat in the funnel-shaped portion, with which one of said enlargements cooperates simultaneously and in conjunction with the cooperation of the tapered portion ofthe valve with its seat.
4. An oil cupcomprising a body portion having a. reduced outlet provided with a seat and an axial openingat the seat, a discharge tube leading in the seat and opening, a stem cooperating withsaid seat and provided with feed grooves, means to guide oil to the-tube, and a valve formed by an enlargementv on the stem cooperating with the tube, whereby to regulate the oil passing through the tube before discharged through the opening on the action of a vacuum or suction caused by rotating parts, tocause the discharge of oil therethrough, said device being capable of minute regulation.
5. An oil cup comprising a body portion having a reduced outlet provided with a seat and an axial opening at the seat, a discharge tube leading to the seat and opening, a stem cooperating 'withsaid seat and provided with feed grooves, means .to guide oil to the tube, and a valve formednby an enlargement 011 the stem cooperating with the tube, whereby to .regulatethe oil passing through the tubebefore discharge through the opening-on the action of-a vacuum; or
