Description

UNITED STATES A PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB It. ROBERTS, OF BUTTSVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORT-AB-LE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,542, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. Romains, of Buttsville, Grundy county, Missouri, have made and invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specification Nature and Objects of the Imc-ation.
My invention has reference to fences; and consists of upright posts constructed of two bars bolted together, between which are inserted horizontal rails, the top rail being held by means of a wire brace that passes through it, the ends of which are attached to stakes driven in the ground at convenient points on either side of the fence. The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, convenient, and durable fence, which, while admitting of :a ready separation of its parts, is, when put together, sufciently strong for all practical purposes.
The accompanying drawing is a view of two panels of my improved fence, showing the several parts thereof.
General Description.
A A are 'the base-blocks, upon which the posts B B stand. They are constructed of wood or any other suitable material, their upper surface being even, so that the posts will stand firmly in position. B B are the posts, which consist of two suitable bars fastened together by the bolts O C', and which stand in an upright position, an interval being left between them suicient to accommodate the ends ofthe rails D D D. The rails D D D are of any suitable material, and have their ends inserted between the upright bars of the posts B B, the end of the top rail Dl and that of the lowest rail Dll being held firmly in place by the bolts O C', which pass through the same. In the top rail D of each panel, at a point adjacent to the posts, a hole is out, through which is passed the wire brace or stay E, the ends of which are crossed below the rail D', and
carried down and secured to the pins or stakes F', that are driven in the ground upon either side of the fence at convenient distances therefrom, and in such positions as to insure the proper action of the stay or brace E, the object of which is to hold the fence securely in place.
Other stays or braces of similar construction, as, for example, e, may be used at pleasure, according to the. character of the fence it is desired to construct.
Operation.
To construct the fence, the base-blocks being in proper position, lay the bars of two of the posts upon the ground, placing the ends of the lowest rail D between them in such a position that the bolt O may be inserted. Insert and fasten the bolt G', set the panel thus formed upon the base-blocks, and insert the other rails, passing the wire brace E through the hole or aperture in the top rail D', and crossing it and securing its ends to the stakes, which are driven in the ground at suitable points. The first panel being completed, the others are constructed in a manner substan tially similar, except that but one post is made and the ends ofthe bars inserted between ,those in the completed panel.
Claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fence herein described, consisting of the base-'blocks A, posts B, rails D D D, bolts l
