Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, HARRY A. JOST, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforced Ferrules for Cues, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of nonmetallic ferrules for billiard cues Which constitutes the subject matter of my former Letters Patent No. 1,210,076, dated December 261 1916, and has a like object, to Wit:

To provide a simple and eliicientstructural formation and association of non-metallic ferrule parts, whereby the tendency to checking and splitting by age and exposure is prevented, and a reinforced and substantial structure provided, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In the accompanying drawing z- Figure 1, is an enlarged central sectional elevation illustrating the )resent improvement arranged as the intermediate connection between the usual leather cue tip and the end of the cue. Y

Like reference numerals indicate like parts in both views. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the point portion of the cue body or handle having the usual reduced stud or doivel 2 for the reception and attachment of the ferrule 3 to Which in turn is attached the leather cue tip 4 in any usual manner. Y

In the present improvement the ferrule. 3 is formed by an inner and main section 5 and an outer and auxiliary section 6 fitted to a reduced end portion of the section 6 next adjacent to and which receives the leather cue tip f1 aforesaid. Said sections 5 and 6 are formed of non-metallic material such commercial celluloid, and as in my former patent, a material part of the present improvement involves forming the inner and main section 5 out of commercial rod celluloid, in Which the grain or fiber extends longitudinally with a tendency to check and split in a like direction, and in forming the outer annular section 6 out of commercial sheet Celluloid, which is composed 'of the required number of thin sheets Welded together during manufacture and in which the tendency to check or split is in one direction of the sheet. v

With the present structural association of parts I have found by extended practical use, that the checking or splitting of the ferrule mainly takes place at the end of the ferrule next adjacent to the leather cue tip 4, and that said checking and splitting tendency is effectively kneutralized by the arrangement of a comparatively smaller outer section 6 at such point, and as shown in the drawing.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A ferrule for billiard cues formed of nonmetal material of a fibrous nature, and comprising a main inner section and a smaller outer annular section fitting a reduced end of said inner section, the inner section hav ing its direction of checking longitudinal of the section and the outer section having its direction of checking transverse of the section, substantially as set forth.
