JOHN s. McWI-IIRTER, or, NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-OPERATING MEANS Ton PASSENGER-VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 30, 1920.
Application filed December 7, 1915. Serial No. 65,481.
' is a specification.
This invention relates to door operating means for passenger vehicles and particularly to that class of the same known as the prepayment type.
The object of the invention is to provide door operating means for cars of the class described which is simple in construction,
eflicient in operation and economical of manufacture.
Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as, will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown by the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings,-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation and in section, of a car end embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View in horizontal section taken on the line 2, 2, Fig. 1, andlooking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 3, 3, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail View, partly in section, of one portion of the door operating apparatus.
Fig. 5 is a broken view in elevation of means to control the door operating apparatus.
The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs throughout the several views.
I accordance with my invention, I provide the usual car end of the well known fare prepayment type consisting of the car platform 6, and the car body 7, provided with the usual platform doors 8 for the ingress and egress of passengers. A barrier 9 is located in the approximate center of the car platform, and adjacent to the car body, 7, as shown, forming an effective barrier to divide the incoming from the outgoing passengers, and to allow a conductors station thereby to collect the fares from the incoming passengers as they pass to the seating In my present invention, I propose to as- V sociate with the barrier or panel referred to, suitable door operatin means which may be conveniently "operated by the conductor when the conductor is stationed adjacent 'to the barrier, for opening and closing the doors 8, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In a suitable bracket 10, mounted on the upper end of the barrier or panel 9, and a yoke bracket 11, suitably suspended from the roof 12 of the vehicle, 'is journaled "a shaft 13, provided at its upper end with a gear wheel 14. Secured to the car frame by brackets 15, 16 and 17, is a casin 18, which incloses a shaft 19. The sha t 19 carries at its upper end a gear wheel 20, which is driven throu -h any desirable connection, such as by t e chain 21, by the wheel 14 of shaft 13. The lower end of the shaft 19 is connected in any suitable may be rocked in any desired manner. It is of importance, however, to prevent pas-v sengers from curiosity or otherwise, rocking the shaft to open the doors, when the conductors station is at the other end of the car. I therefore show one simple arrange ment wherein I provide the shaft 13 with a collar 25 secured thereto to rotate therewith which collar is provided with pins 26, 29, projecting from opposite sides thereof. I provide a removable handle 27 with forked curved portions 28 adapted to fit around" 26, 29 may be secured directly to the shaft 13.
Many changes in details will readily oc cur to those skilled in the art, and there fore my invention, in its broad scope as de fined in the claims, is not to be limited or restricted to the specific structure shown and described.
Having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention, and having shown and described one embodiment of the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car, the combination with a car body and a platform, a door inclosing said platform, a shaft for actuating said door, of a barrier positioned on the platform extending transversely thereacross at the center of the point of jointure of said car body, and a platform to define separate passageways between the car body and platform, a rock shaft, a step bearing mounted on the top of said barrier to receive and support the lower end of said rock shaft, a removable handle for said rock shaft, means carried,
by said rock shaft, for roviding engagement between the said shaft, and handle, and connections between said door shaft and said rock shaft.
2. In a car body, the combination with a car body and a platform, a door inclosing said platform, a shaft for actuating said door, of a barrier positioned on the platform extending transversely thereacross at the center of the point of jointure of said car body and a platform to define separate passageways between the car body and platform, a rock shaft, a step bearing, mounted on the top of said barrier to receive and support the lower end of said rock shaft, a yoke bearing secured to the roof of the car for receiving the other end of said shaft,
and a removable handle for said rock shaft, means carried by said shaft for providing engagement between said shaft and handle, and connections between said door shaft and said rock shaft.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16thday of November, A. D.
