This invention relates to an improved metallic railway tie and means for securely fastening the track rails intheir proper position on the ties of steam and electric railways. 7

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simple construction of metallic rail way tie in connection with wooden blocks,
said blocks constituting a resilient support for the track rails, and a reliable insulation of the rails so that said rails may serve as efiicient conductors in the usual automatic signaling systems. The foregoing and such other objects as may'appear from the ensuing description are attained by the means hereinafter more fully described and by the combination, constructionya'rrangement and location of the parts such as illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the :claims appended hereto, it being understood that slight changes inthe form, proportions, and minor details of the construetion may be resorted to without departingfrom the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

It will be understood that the space between the wooden blocks and at the outer end of said blocks is filled up with track ballast which assists in preventing any lateral, longitudinal or skidding action of the railway ties during the strains to which they are usually subjected.
While I have shown two pins fitted through the openings formed in the central member and into the holes or recesses formed in each block, it may be necessary to use but a single pin to prevent the spreading outward of the block but it is preferred to employ two pins, in order to force the blocks into fixed contact with the rail base and maintain the blocks in such position when securely clamped to the metallic tie.
It will be perceived that each block clamping plate 7 is hollowed out somewhat in its inner surface and formed with a solid integral portion 10 extending entirely around the plate, said plate being also provided with a thickened central portion hav ing a flattened outer surface for the reception of the securing nut 9, and each end of the plate is provided with an integral outward and upward and an outward and downward extension 13, terminating substantially in transverse alinement with the rail securing spikes, said plates so tightly compressing the fibers of the blocks together when securely fastened to the blocks, as to practically eliminate all tendency of the blocks to split when the rail securing spikes are driven therein, and the said plate is so formed as to prevent its contact with the rail and to prevent contact with anti-rail creepers when used in connection with the tie Having'thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i 1.
