STOVE-LID LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. so, 1920.
Application led September 26, 1919. Serial No. 326,576.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Josnrrr PoLsHAW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stove lid lifter, its object being to. provide a device of this character` whereby a stove lid may -be conveniently engaged and held against any possibility of slipping and falling. c
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which*- Figure 1 is a view partially in side elevation and partially in longitudinal section of a lid lifter embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same,
Fig. L is a transverse sectional view taken substantially upon line IV-IV of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one end of the jaw-actuating rod.
Referring tov the drawing, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 indicates the body or handle of the lifter, which is preferably longitudinally curved in the usual manner, and is provided at its lower forward end with a lifting projection or blade 6. The handle is longitudinally channeled to provide a recess in the under side thereof to receive an actuating rod 7 which has its rear end connected as at 8 by a pin and slot connection to the free end of the short arm 9 of the bell crank lever 10. The bell crank lever 10 is pivoted to the handle 5 as at 11 and extends r forwardly to provide a hand lever 12 normally projected outwardly of the recess of the handle 5 by means of the compression spring 13 which is arranged between the free end of the short arm 9 and a lug 14 formed on the extreme rear end of the handle 5.
The forward end of the rod 7 is transversely slotted as at 15 on its under side for reception of the overlapping ends 16 of the pivoted lid-gripping jaws 17 which are mounted upon the under side of the blade 2. The rod 7 is provided with an upwardly extending lug 18 disposed within the longitudinal slot 19 of the blade 6 so as to guide the rod 7 in` its longitudinal movements and to hold the same against lateral movements. The jaws 17 are of substantially bell crank form and are normally disposed in their retracted inoperative position as shown in Fig. 3 by full lines inwardly of the side edges of the blade 6.V
In operation, the forward end of the tool is applied in the usual manner to dispose the blade 6 within the socket of the stove lid. The operator then grips the handle 5 and hand lever 12 and exerts an upward pressure on said hand lever, thus forcing the arm 9 and rod 7 rearwardly and placing the spring 13 under compression. The rearward movement of the rod 7 causes swinging movement of the jaws 17 to the dotted line position of Fig. 3, wherein the serrated faces of said jaws are projected beyond the side edges of the blade 6 and into gripping engagement with the side walls of the socket of the stove lid so that any probability of the lid slipping or becoming displaced in falling while it is being handled is avoided.
From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of use of my improved lid lifter will be readily understood and its advantages appreciated.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that minor changes may -be made in whole or in art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
1. A lid lifter comprising a handle having a lifting blade, a rod extending longitudinally of said handle and terminatin at one end beneath said blade, laterally swlngable socket gripping jaws pivoted tothe under side of said blade and operatively connected to said rod whereby rearward. movement of the rod will cause outward swinging movement of said jaws, means to rearwardly move said rod, and a spring operatively associated with said means and the handle to normally hold the rod in a forward position with the gripping jaws retracted. Y
2. A stove lidV lifter comprising a handle having a longitudinal recess in the under side thereof and provided with a lifting blade, a longitudinally movable rod disposed within said recess and terminating at one end beneath said blade, gripping jaws of substantially bell crank 'form operatively connected to the adjacent end of said rod, spring means associated with the opposite end of said rod to normallyl retain the latter in forwardly projected position with the jaws retracted inwardly of the side edges of said blade, and a hand lever Voperatively connected to said rod and movable toward said handle when the latter is gripped to move the rod rearwardly and project the gripping .jaws beyond the side edges of said blade.
3. A stove lid lifter comprising a handle having a lifting blade, laterally swingable jaws pivoted to said blade, means to laterally swin said jaws into gripping engagement w1th the side walls of a stove lid socket when said handle is gripped, and
means to normally maintain the jaws retracted inwardly of the side edges ofY said blade.
4. A stove lid lifter4 comprising a handle having a lifting blade provided with a longitudinal slot, a rod disposed longitudinally of the handle and having an upward eXtension slidably guided in said slot, said rod being transversely slotted on its under side,
