To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVEY EDwARDs and JOHN MORGAN EDWARDS, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Garage, Gamant, carmarthenshlre, 'Wales, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Valves for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mechanically operated and regulated extra air valve, for internal combustion engines and specially suited for motors, tractors and flying machines.
And in order that our invention may be clearly understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a detailed sectional view of our invention, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the controlling arm, the connection to the coned valve and the control lever.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the views. A is a central governor driven by suitable gearing from the engine.
To the sliding end B of this governor, a slip ring 0 is attached, to which one end of an arm D is fitted, the other end being attached to a suitable bracket F, so that the end E, acts as a fulcrum to the arm D.
To the arm D, at Gr, is attached one end of a Bowden wire mechanism I in such a position as to give a certain amount of travel. The stop H for this end of the Bowd'en wire I, is fixed to a suitable bracket, in such a position as to give free and easy movement of the Bowden wire. The stop at the other end of the Bowden wire is fixed into the center of the adjustable cap 0 of the combined valve box and bracket N. In-
side the valve box N is fitted a spiral compression spring J, through which the Bowden inner wire passes and is secured to a coned and flanged valve K.
The engine driven at varying speeds causes the arm D to move more or less accordingly. The arm D being connected by the Bowden wire mechanism I to the coned valve K, moves the latter strictly in proportion to the movement of the arm D. The compression spring J, fitted inside the combined valve box and bracket 0, is adjusted to such tension in conjunction with the expanding spring T, when the controlling lever X is in middle position that the valve K is kept down on its seating until a certain predetermined speed of engine has been at tained, at which point the valve K commences to open as the-speed increases above this predetermined rate, the arm D is moved along its are more and more, therefore the coned valve K is moved farther off its seating in proportion to it. As the speed decreases to this predetermined rate the valve K is forced to close by the combined action of the springs J and T, so that the valve will be fully closed when the predetermined rate is again attained.
To meet different conditions existing from time to time, the tension on arm D can be varied at the will of the engine driver by moving the lever X one way or the other, restricting or extending at will the movement of the valve K, and altering the predetermined engine speed at which the valve K should move off its seating.
The lever X is provided with a spring loaded pawl which engages in a rack, or any other self locking device.
What we claim as our invention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is An air valve for an internal combustion engine, including a conical valve, an inclosure therefor inclosing a helical resilient member controlling the seating of said conical valve, a centrifugal governor driven from the engineand having a slip-ring and a sliding member having one end connected to said slip-ring, an arm connected at one end to said slip ring, the other end of said arm being fulcrumed in position, a Bowden wire-member connected to said arm and effecting connection therebetween and said conical valve and resilient means cooperative with the first referred to resilient member for the seating or closing of said conical valve, comprising a spring and an adjusting device said spring effecting connection between said arm and said adjusting device.
