UNITED STATES PATENT. QFFICE.
MARCELLUS E.. TUOKER, 'OF GANAAN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENTIN SAWING AND PLANING MACHINES.
Specification forming'part of Letters Patent No. 133,604, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be'it known that I, MARCELLUS EUGENE TUCKER, of Canaan, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sawing and Planing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to a combination saw-mill and planer; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices whereby the planing machinery may be adapted to the thickness of the board; also, in the construction and novel arrangement of a pivoted block, and of automatic devices for bringing the same underneath the end of the board as it issues from the planer, and shifting it out of the way of the saw; all substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the saw, B the saw-carriage, O the laterally moving head-block, and D the adjustable frame containing the planing or dressing machinery. This frame slides toward and from the saw-carriage between ways E. B is a rack attached to the bottom of the frame D, and-B 'a pinion engaging with said rack, and secured to a shaft, D, by turning, which the frame may be adjusted as desired for the purpose of slabbing the log. F designates plates, between which and the planing-tool the board passes. The space F between the plates allows the shavings to issue. G represents the planing-tool, consisting of a rotary disk having planing-blades g, and secured upon the end of a shaft, H, which has its hearings in an adjustable frame, I, traveling between guides 1 and furnished with laterally-extendin g arms or brackets I, carrying up right friction-rollers 1 in contact with which L.-shaped pivoted arm attached to the saw- I carriage, and connected by means of an arm, K, to a crotched lever, M, pivoted to the side of the sawcarriage. As the saw carriage moves forward and the dressed board issues from the planer, a pin, m, projecting from one of the carriage-ways, moves the crotched lever, and causes the device J to be turned so that one arm may pass under and support the end of the board. As the carriage moves back the pin m reverses the position of the crotched lever, and swings the device J out of the way of the saw. N designates a pivoted dog attached to the head-block, and designed for j the purpose of fastening the last board of the log after it has been taken from the carriage, and passed through the dresser far enough to rest on the device J. The dog may be raised and lowered upon a vertical post, 0, to suit a board of any width.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable frame I and set-screw I, in combination with the planing-tool G and guide-plates F, substantially as specified.
2. The adjustable frame D, containing the planing machinery herein described, in combination with the saw A, saw-mill carriage B, and rest J, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with a saw-mill carriage, of the L-shaped lever J, the planer D, crotched lever M, arm K, and pin m, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MAROELLUS EUGENE TUCKER.
Witnesses:
JOHN M. MILTON, JOHN L. SPRING.
