ELECTRIC HEATER FOR WATER AND OTHER LIQUIDS.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONIO Parini, a subject of the King of Italy, having resided in the United States one year last past and having declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Electric Heater for Tater and other Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a novel construction of an electric heater for water or other liquids wherein I employ an outer casing provided with an inner lining of porcelain or the like within which is supported a body having a resistance wound thereupon whereby the water or other liquid is heated, a novel construction of carbon comb electrodes being employed, which are disposed in series with the heating element or resistance coil, whereby the presence and the absence of the water to be heated closes and opens respectively the electric circuit whereby the device is automatic in its operation and only operative when it contains a certain amount of the liquid to be heated, or when the water level has reached a certain point, so that there is no waste of electricity, and the device is automatic, economical and reliable in its operation at all times. y It further consists of a novel construction and manner of as: sembling the carbon comb electrodes, whereby the device is rendered automatic in its operation, the circuit being open and closed according to variations in the water level.
It further consists of a novel manner of mounting and supporting said carbon comb electrodes with respect to the body or muftle supporting the resistance or heating element, so that all the parts are readily accessible for the purposes of replacement, inspection or repairs. 'Attention is directed to my co-pending application for carbon comb electrode, Serial No. 320,445.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, but it is to be understood that the several instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings,
1 designates my novel construction of electric heater for water and other liquids, the same comprising the outer casing 2, which is preferably widened at its upper portion and provided with the internal porcelain lining or bushing 3, within which is contained the porcelain resistance supporting body 4, which is supported within the casing in any suitable manner, said body having the lower flange 5 which is provided with the vertical slots 6 for permitting the circulation or 4upward flow of water which enters the casing 1 through the inlet 7, the water after being heated flowing from said casing through the port 8 in the upper portion of the lining 3, and the outlet 9.
10 designates ports in the upper portion of the body 4, above the top of which are located the carbon comb electrodes 11 and 12, the same being supported in any suitable manner and preferably respectively formed of a vertical w-all 13, having the laterally extending or projecting members 14, and the vertical wall 15 having the projecting orl lateral members 16, said members 14 and 1G being arranged in staggered or alternating order, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 3. The resistance wire 17 is wound around the body 4, and it will be 'understood that since said resistance is in series with the battery of carbon comb elecyrodes 11 and 12, that the current entering by the conductors 18 and 19 flows to the upper member 16 of the electrode 12, through the loop 21, back to the conductor 22 which passes through the insulating sleeve 23, said conductor leading to the conductor 24, and said sleeve 23 passing through ports or openings 35 in the elements 14 and 1G.

when the waterV rises to a predetermined height with respect to said electrodes, the
circuit will be closed. thereby, .and the heated water between the electrode elements 14 and16-will partly flow out at the outlet 9 and partly vaporize, so that when the water level has fallen a certain predetermined amount, the circuit automatically opens and there is no waste of electricity. The current flows lfrom the conductors 18 and 19 to `t-he .upper element 16 of the comb electrode 12, through the water -or other liquid to be heated to the elements 14 of the'electrode 11 to the resistance 17 the loop 21 to the conductor 22, and conductor 24C.
ln case it is desired to obtain access to the interior it is; only necessafy to remove the top or cover 27, whereupon all the parts are readily accessible for the purposes of inspection, replacement `or repair. The screen or strainer 31 will arrest all ordinary impurities and any further impurities collected in the sediment chamber 32 can be blown olf upon opening the cock 34.
By the provision of the ports 5 and 10 in the body 4 and the ports 85, an veffective circulation is provided for the liquid to be heated and while I have described vmy invention as particularly applicable to heating water, it will be understood that any other liquid or fluid desired can; be heated therein.
lt will be understood that wherever desired, any necessary insulation for the variliquids which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while l have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susce atible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope ofthe invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim asin'euv and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. `Inanlelectric water heater, a casing, an inlet and outlet therefor, a porcelain lining therefor, a, resistance supported in the lower portion thereof, and carbon comb electrodes supported in the upperl portion of said casing and adapted to be wholly or partly submerged by the liquid to hehe-ated, whereby upon variations in thelevel of said liquid corresponding variations ofV resistance in said carbon comb electrodes will be obtained.
2. n an electric water hea ter, a casing,ja resistance supported in the lower portion thereof, and carbon comb electrodes supported in the upper portion of said, casing, one terminal of said resistance being connected to one of said electrodes, and the other terminal thereof to a conductor, said carbon comb electrodes beingadapted to be whollyor partly submerged by the liquid to be heated, whereby upon variations in the level: of said liquid corresponding variations oil-resistance in said carbon comb electrodes will-be obtained.
3. In an electric heater for water Vor other conducting liquids, an outer casing, an inner liningl therefor, a resistancev supporting body contained within said lining, a battery of Vcarboncomb electrodes supported above said body, a cover for said casing, conductors supported-in said cover, oneterminal of said resistance being connected to one o f said electrodes, and the other terminal thereof leading to one ofv said conductors.
4.-. Inan electricheater for -wateror other liquids, an outer casing, an inner lining therefor. a resistance supporting `body icontained withinsaid lining ancLhavingports at its top and bottom, a resistance supported on Said body, a carbon comb electrode having projecting elements supported above the top of said body and connected to one terminal of said resistance, a second carbon comb electrode having also projecting elements arranged in staggered order With reference to said first mentioned elements, said electrodes being located in the upper portion of said casing, conductors leading exteriorly from said casing, and an electrical connection from said resistance to one of said conductors.
5. In an electric heater for Water or other liquids, an outer casing, an inner lining therefor, a resistance supporting body contained Within said lining and having ports at its top and bottom, a resistance supported on said body, a carbon comb electrode having projecting elements supported above the top of said body and connected to one terminal of said resistance, a second carbon comb electrode having also projecting elements arranged in staggered order with reference to said rst mentioned elements, said electrodes being located in the .upper portion of said casing, conductors leading eX- teriorly from said casing, and an electrical connection from said resistance to one of said conductors, in combination with an insulating sleeve passing through ports in the projecting elements of Said electrodes, said last mentioned connection passing through said sleeve.
6. In an electric heater for Water or other conducting liquids, an outer casing, an inner lining therefor provided with an upper flange supported on the top of. said casing, a cover detachably secured to said casing, an inlet and an outlet for said casing, said lining having a port communicating with said outlet, a resistance supporting body contained in said casing and having upper and lower ports therein, a resistance carried by said body, conductors supported in said cover, and carbon comb electrodes in the upper portion of said body and in series with said resistance.
