REAMER.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented-Mara 23, 1920.
v Application .flled June 27, 1919. Serial No; 807,051.
Be it known that I, Tons'ron 'ALroNso (lrYnLsDonFF, a citizen of the United- States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in'Reaniers, of which the following is a specification.
Theobject of my present invention 1s the provision of what may be properly denominated a floating reamer; the sald floating reamer being materially advantageous in that the reamer is held firm and steady in the holder, and yet is enabled to follow or accommodate itself to the hole that is be in reamed.
ro; theattainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the novel combinations and adaptation of parts hereinafter described'and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rean1er and complementary holder constituting the best practical embodiment that I have as yet devised.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal-central section of the same, partly in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts. in all of the views of the drawings.
'The reamer is numbered 1, and its holder 2. In the heel end of the reamer is a socket 3 that describes, by preference, more than half of a hollow sphere, and in said socket is carried and retained an anti-friction ball 4.. At intermediate points in its length the reanier 1 is provided with depresslons 5; the said depressions being preferably in the same transverse plane, and preferably, though not necessarily, equi-distant, as illustrated.
In the holder 2 is a socket 6 for the receptioi of the reamer or reamer shank 1, and opposed to the inner end Wall 7 of said socket is a steel washer 7 in which is a depression 8, designed to seat the ball -l. At 9 in the forward portion of the holder 2 are four (more or less) radial and threaded bores in which are disposed screw plugs 10.
kerfed at their outer ends, as indicated by 11, and equipped with inner reduced end portions 12. In the inner smooth portions of the bores 9 are balls 18, designed to cooperate with the depressions 50f the reamer shank l, andback of said balls 13 are springs 14: which surround the reduced end ortions 12 and are interposed between the lialls and the major portions of the plugs 10, as illustrated. Manifestly the said springs 14 are calculated to yieldingly hold the balls 13 to their work in such manner that under stress the balls are adapted to ive readily outward. There is suilicient p ay between the balls 13 and the plugs 10 to permit the reamer to float in either direction; it being understood here that the springs 14 are of suflicient strength to hold the reamer firm and steady, while permitting the reamer'to accommodate itself to or follow the hole that is being reamed.
Manifestly the interposition of the steelwasher 7, slightly smaller in diameter than the socket 6, between the ball 4 and the end wall 7 of the socket enables the end of the reamer to float as well as the body thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A reamer having equi-distant depressions in its side in the same transverse plane and also having a socket in the center of its heel end in combination with a holder having a longitudinal socket and also having radial bores reaching outwardly from the socket to the outer side of the holder, the outer portions of said bores'being threadd and the inner portions thereof smooth, a Washer, of less diameter than the socket, opposed to the end wall of the socket, a ball disposed in the end socket of the reamer and a depression in said Washer to enable the heel end of the reamer to float, balls disposed in the radial bores of the holder and coiiperating with the depressions in the side of the reamer, screw plugs arranged in the outer portions of the radial bores and hav- In. testimony whereof I aliix my signature TORS'ION ALFONSO GYLLSDORFF.
