The present intention relates to high tension distributors for magnetos, and particularly for magiietos for igniting the combustible mixtures in internal combustion engines having many cylinders, as eight or more.

So also, where the terminals are arranged entirely around the distributer block, the connections to the` terminals underneath the block ina)Y be inaccessible, and too close to the mechanical interrupter below or even necessitate a change trom this usual relative arrangement 'ot the distributer and interrupter.
In order to overcome these difficulties, it
has been proposed to divide a single circular series ot contacts, and the series of termi nals connected thereto, intoy two or more circular series. While this arrangement increases the peripheral separation of adjacent contacts and adjacent terminals, the axial length o the distributer and the number of rotatable brushes thereof are increased, thereby increasing the weight of the distributor parts especially when applying the arrangen'ient to a two spark magneto for generating sparks simultaneously at the tivo spark plugs ofeach cylinder of the engine.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a distributer-having one or more circular series ot cont-acts for regular or ir regular intervals ot ignition of a single or two spark magneto, wherein the embedded conductors are not unduly long or crowded, and the terminals are not too crowded although ot a comparatively large number, the size and weight ot the distributer block being kept down at the saine time, accomplish this object, by providing a distributor block of generally triangular with stepped. terminals arranged along the opter periphery ot the two sides of the triangle meeting at the top, the bottom of the block preferably being .devoid ot terminals so that all the cables may be connected 'and disconnected conveniently and so that the distributor block may be ar ranged at its usual place directly above the mechanical interrupter Without beingI of undue axial length. Some of the stepped terminals, and particularly those near the bottom oi the block, are` angularly oset from the others, and increasingly so toward the bottom, in such manner that, in the preferred embodimentdisclosed hereinafter, the terminals efectiifely utilize the puter periphery of a block ot distinctively appropriate shape tor the purpose. In tliii's way, the outer periphery of the distribiiter block approaches an outline concentric with tlieinner periphery along which are located the series of distributor contacts, thereby reducing the size and weight of the distributer block and shortening the embedded conductors, besides separating those conductors 'from each other and providing anV outline block, even where there is a comparatively large number ot terminals in each series.
By associating two or more races in a distrib'uter block of this kind with two or more rotating brushes, a twinor multiple distributer is provided for single or two spark magnetos, the races being sutlicicntly separated by intervenng insulating material to give the incessary leakage or creeping distance between the adjacent contacts and the terminals therefor.
n In theaccompanying drawings illustrating these preferred embodiments ot' my invention in application, as an example, to a magneto of the sleeve type intended to be associated with a l-cycle l-cylinder engine, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section ot' certain parts of a. two spark magneto having a twin distributer for irregular tiring; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the distributer end ot' the inagneto; Fig. 3 is a section, partly broken away, on line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. l is av wiring diagram; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section ot a similar distributor for a single spark magneto.
The magneto has magnets 1, a rotatable sleeve 2 supported in bearings 3 and carry ing the magneto gear eL. and the distributor pinion 5, and an. armature (S fixed in bearings 7 by the locking disk S and having a gene 'ating winding comprising the primary turns 9 and the secondary turns 10. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1. the. twin distributer Vhas two distributor brushes 13 and 1l tast with the distributer gear 15 and connected by the inside conductor lo and the outside conductor 17 through the two collector brushes (not shown) to the two insulated terminals ci the secondary turns 10 in the well known way. The twin distributer block 18 ot insulating material has two races around the inner periphery. one with the circular series oi spark-plug distributing contacts 19 arranged around its inner periphery to be successively engaged by the brush 13 and the other with the circular series of spark-plug distributing contacts Q0 arranged around its inner periphery to be successively engaged by the brush 14. The two races. together with the intervening sy'iacing and positioning ring Q1. are. secured to the magneto structure directly above the mechanical interruptor by means of the triangular spider E22 having the .screws Q3.

Each ot' these stepped seats has a terminal at the end of a conductor *25 leading to one ot the distributing contacts, and is connected to a cable 26 leading to the insulated electrode ot one of the sparkplugs 27 ot the engine.
As shown in Fig. al, the two terminals of the secondary turns 1() are connected to the two distribnter brushes 13 and 14, whereas the insulated terminal of the primary turns S) is connected to the insulated circuit contact 28 of the mechanical interrupter. the other terminal ot the primary turns and the other circuit contact 29 heilig grounded. One series of the. spark-plug distributing contacts is Connected to one set ot' the spark plugs of the engine, and the other series ot contacts is connected to the other set oi spark plugs, the arrangement being such that. at each period of ignition. sparks are produced simultaneously at the two spark plugs of a c vlinder. The magneto selected tor illustration is intended to be associated with a. lecycle engine requiring irregular tiring. as, for instance, a 12-cylinder engine having its cylinders arranged on a Al5@ V. Since this engine requires ignition at l5". 75C. ao. T5". and so on throughout the rotation ot tht crank shaft. the spark plug distributing contacts ol' each series are arranged according to that recurring irregular spacing. whereas the cam member 30 of the mechanical interrupter has its cams spaced at 67.50. 112.50, 67.50, and 112.50. corresponding to the tour positions olI maximum generation ot' the magneto in each rotation. the sleeve i2 heilig driven by thc gcarl at one and a halt times crank shaft speed and the distributer brushes be ing driven `by the gears 5. 15 at one-third that speed. equal lto cam shaft speed.
ln the second embodiment shown in Fig. 5. there is but one series of spark plug distributing contacts 3l and one series of terminals, the distributer being intended to` association with a single. spark magneto lor regular or irregular firing. as desired. The single distributor brush 32 is tast. with the distributor gear 33. The distributer block 3l has a series ot .stepped terminals arranged. as in the lirst. embodiment. along the two sides of the generally triangular periphery ot' the Iblock and connected to the spark plug cables 35.
In both ot the foregoing embodiments. it will be appare-nt that the. terminals or seats near the bottom ot'the bloei are. angularly otl'set trom the horizontal ones near the top ot the block. and that the angular extent ol the ol'set increases tov: rd the bottom. so that not only is the leakage distance between adjacent terminals increased. but as a result ot the fact that the periphery ot the block v cable conductors.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is l.
