Description
H. HUBER.
Devices for Handling Corpses.
N0. 133,447. Patented Nov.26,1872.
AM PHOTO-ll TIMER/1 PHIL CIZMKKOSBU/PNES P/MKESS) HENRY HUBER, OF- GRESTLINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HANDLING COR PSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,447, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HUBER, residin g at Grestline, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Undertakers Implement, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of this invention consists in providing an implement for the use of undertakers in placing a corpse in a coffin. It is composed of a pole of suitable length, one strap fixed to the pole for the support of the trunk, and two adjustable straps for the support, respectively, of the lower extremities and the head.
The drawing shows a perspective view of the implement. The pole A is fashioned at each end into a suitable handle. The strap B, which is intended to pass around the body under the arms, is permanently fixed to the pole, nearer to one end than to the other; a loop being formed in it near the buckle to embrace the pole, to which it is then nailed or otherwise secured. The straps C and I) are constructed in manner like the strap B, but are simply slipped on the pole by their loops, and can be adjusted thereon in accordance with the length of the corpse. The end of each strap is stiffened by, or terminates in, a metallic tongue E, so that it may be pushed under the corpse to theopposite side Without necessitating the lifting of the same. After having been thus placed under the corpse, the ends of the several straps are fastened to their respective buckles, when the corpse may be lifted by raising the pole, and deposited in the cofi'in which done, the straps are unbuckled and drawn from under the corpse.
Ordinarily it requires from three to five persons to deposit a corpse in a coffin. With the assistance of the above-described implement only two persons are needed for this work; nor is it necessary to touch the body, which in some cases is not only objectionable but dangerous.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. An implement for undertakers, composed of a pole, A, and straps B, O, and D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Such an implement as described in the preceding claim, when the ends of the straps are stiffened by, or terminate in, metallic tongues, E, substantially as and for the pur pose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 14th day of August, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY HUBER.
