No. 133,439. Patented Nov. 26,1872.

UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. GRIFFENBERG, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOM-SADDLES AND CHAFlNG-BANDS FOR MASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,439, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'l. GRIFFEN- BERG, of Wilmington, New Castle county, Delaware, have invented an Adjustable Boom- Saddle and Chafing-Band for Masts, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to enable a boom to be supported upon a mast at any required height above the deck, and also to prevent the chafing and wearing away of the said mast by thejaws of the boom.
I accomplish this object by the use of a metal band, A, plainly shown in the perspective views, Figures 1 and 2, which is composed of two sections, B and B, hinged to each other at a, and arranged to be drawn together at their opposite edges, and thus clamped tightly to the mast at any required height above the deck, the said band having near the bottom a wide flange or saddle, b, for the support of the jaws d of the boom, which in turning bear against the band above the saddle, thus preventing the chafing of the mast. I prefer to draw the hinged sections together in clamping them to the mast by screw-bolts passing through lugs e c on the said sections, as shown in Fig.2, but other equivalent fastening devices may be employed. I also prefer that the sections of the band should be hinged together by a pin, f, adapted to tubular projections g on the said sections, so that the latter may be entirely disconnected'from each other for convenience in attaching the same to or detach ing them from the mast; but they may, if desired, be permanently hinged together, and may only have sufficient movement to permit the vertical adjustment of the band upon the mast. The band may be made of boiler-plate with a flanged saddle, I), riveted to each section, as shown in Fig. 3, or the sections may be cast in malleable iron in one piece with the saddle, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
My invention, although available for all vessels in which booms are employed, is especially applicable to light-draft schooners and sloops on which deck-loads are carried,
and in which, therefore, it is frequently necessary to raise and lower the booms.
I claim- The combination of a boom-saddle and a sectional chafing-band capable of vertical adjustment on a mast, as and for the purpose described.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
