Be it known that OARL'S, Hanan, deceased, late of the city of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York,
has inventedcertain new and useful Imrovements in Table-Elevating Devices for aper-Feeding Machines, of which the following is aspecification.
The present invention relates to table-elevating devices for paper feeding machines,
and more particularly to a device adapted especially for use in connection with a paper feeding machine of the type described in application for U. S. Letters Patent, Serial No. 235,412, filed by the said Carl S H a-nau on May 18, 1918.
In the said application, a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a stack is described, including a feeding roller having a bodily motion to and from the front edges of thesheets and adapted to engage the top sheet of the stack or pile. The stack of paper sheets is supported in machines of this type by a table, that is usually provided with automatic means for elevating the same, the elevating means being controlled by the height of the pile, the object being to maintain the level of the top sheet substantially uniform.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a table-raising mechanism that is controlled by the feeding devices of the sheets, in contradistinction to mechanisms heretofore in use, wherein separate control ling members are provided, with the result that not only are the machines complicated in construction, but are caused to operate the elevating means too slowly.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the elevatingmeans that it can be conveniently mounted upon machines a1- rcady in use, without necessitating material. changes in the construction ofthe latter. a
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claim Specification 6f Letters Patent Patented Mar. 23, 1920.

without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accom side ofthe machine, said frame members being connected in any suitable manner, for instance by tie rods, not shown. The stack of paper, denoted by the numeral 11, is car ried by table12, which is supported by members 13 adjacent the inner sides of the frame members 10, said supporting members being each provided with a lug 14, extending through a slot 15 in the respective side frame member. Each lug has a screw-threaded bore, in mesh with a screw-threaded spindle 16 These spindles are each provided at their upper ends with abevel gear-17, in
mesh with a similar gear 18, the gears 18 beingfixed to a shaft 19, that is rotatably mounted in the side frames 10. he paper stack is guided in its upward movement by a transverse frame :20, having atits upper end a forwardly bent inclined lip 21. i y a i The feeding and separating means comprises a suitable number of rollers 22, each attached to a spindle 23, which is rotatably journaled in a forked lever 24. These levers are fixed each to a rock-shaft 25, which is slidably arranged in horizontal guides (not shown), a mechanism being provided for causing the said shaft to move back and forth in its guides and also to rock the same, as appears from the application for Letters Patent above referred to. This mechanism serves to cause the rollers 22 to engage the top sheet when the said rock-shaft starts its forward movement, and to disengage the same from the pile when the rock-shaft starts its backward movement. To therock-shaft 25 is furthermore fixed a rearwardly extending arm 26, cooperating with a detent 27, in the form of a lever,
that is fulcrumed at 29 to one of the side frame members 10. The free end of this detent is provided with a lug 30, adapted to cooperate with a series of ratchet teeth 31 on an arc-shaped member 32, the latter being fixed to a'sleeve 33, that is oscillatably mounted upon the shaft. 19. ,Onthis sleeve isprovided an upwardly extending arm 34,

The arc-shaped member 32 is provided with a projection 38 with which cooperates a.slide 39,-that extends through a gu de 40.
The lower end of the slide is pivoted at 41 to a lever 42, the latter being fulcrumed at 43 to one of the side frame members 10. This lever carries an anti-friction roller 44,

The operation of the table-raising mechanism is as follows :If the height of the stack of paper on the table is, below normal, I the arm26 rises and dis'engages the, lug 30 of the detent 27flfromthe fatchet teeth 31 of the; arcrshaped member 32 when, during the separating and feeding operation, the rollment. It isv to be observed that the extent of movement of the detent 27 depends entirely upon the height of the stack of paper on the table, the movement of the outer end of the arm 26 bein dependent upon the position of the feeding rollers 22 when in contact with the stack during the separatin and feeding operations. On the other hand: the level, to which the projection 38 on the arc-shaped member 32 is allowed to sink, depends entirely upon the position of the lug 30 on the detent 27. Consequently the extent of the upward movement of the table 12 is controlled at any time by the height of the paper stack.

In a paper feeding machine, the combina- .tion with a frame, of a stack-carrying table slidably mounted thereon, a rock-shaft on said frame, sheet feeding means carried by said shaft, an arm fixed to said shaft, a sec- 0nd shaft rotatably mounted on said frame, screw-threaded spindles in engagement with said table, a. driving connection between said second shaft and said spindles, a ratchet wheel fixed to said second-named shaft, :1 pawl-carrying arm loosely mounted upon said second-named shaft having an arcshaped toothed extension below said lastnamed shaft, said pawl carrying member bein caused to swing by gravity around its raft, a detent plvoted to said frame having a lug adapted to mesh with the teeth of said arc-shaped member positioned to be actuated by said arm, and a slide operating in unison with said feeding means for returning said pawl-carrying member to normal position from its gravity-induced position.
