To all whom t may concern:
it lrnown that l, ANDREW H. REED, a. citizen of the TJnited States, residing at Fullerton, in the county of Orange and titate ci California, have invented a new and useiul lnserter and Elevator' tor Standing Valves. of which the 'following 1s a specication.
rhis invention embodies in a single de vice means for inserting and. elevating standing valves, and an object of the invention is to provide an inserte-r and elevator which constantly in position on the standing valve and lower end oi' the pump plunger so that the standing valve can be inserted 1n the well by lowering the plunger into the working barrel, and so that the standing valve can be withdrawn by pulling the plunger from the working barrel.
Another object is to produce a device of this character yfrom which the standing valve may be suspended and which, after the standing valve is seated. will auto1naticallybecome disengaged so that the grippin ira/einher may be withdrawn, leaving the stai 'ng valve in its seat.
i-nother object is to provide a device ot' this character which can be readily lowered and then turned through an angle of a cer ta in number of degrees by turning thesucker rod to cause engagement of one of the elevator members with the other elevator member onthe standingivalve so that raising of the .--rst named elevator member will cause lifting of the standing valve from its seat.
nndther object is to eliminate use of the ordinary Garbut rod or similar device en telling irst withdrawal of the pump plunger and then lowering of a cable into the well to remove the standing valve.
Another object is to produce a device of this character which will be positive in operation. f

There is provided a gripping member l which may be, for example, of `cylindrical -zonstruction as shown in the drawings. The member l is provided with screw-threads 2 or-other suitable means for connection with the plunger of the pump with which the invention coperates, a fragment of the lower end of a pump plunger being indicated at 3 in Fig. l. If the plunger 3 is et the type having a receiving valve at its lower end the plunger portion 3 will ce connected with and extend below the lower end of the cage ot said receiving valve.y In such event it is clear that when the pump plunger is in action its lower valve will approach to within a. comparatively slight distance ot' the standing valve which is indicated at Ll. rlhe plunger 3 and standing valve 4: forni no portion of the invention but merely cooperate therewith. f
The gripping member 1 is yprovided' with one or moreopenings 5, the upper edges of which forni `slant-ing` abutments 6. ln the drawings there are two openings iand the slants oi" the abutments 6 are opposed to one another when both are viewed from one side. The abutnients r6 are adapted to engage the upper end of a head 7 whichforrns the upper extremity' of a stem S that is permanently screw-threaded into or otherwise fastened to the standing valve e as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The head 7 forms a. shoulder or shoulders 9 on the stem 8. ln the drawings two such shoulders are shown. These shoulders 9 are adapted to be engaged b y abutments 10 'formed by the lower edges of the opening-s rihe standing valve e is suspended by the stem 8 from' the gripping member 1 when the shoulders 9 rest upon the abutments 10, as in Fig. 1.
The lower portion of the bore of the gripping member 1 forms al cylindrical mouth 11, and extending' upwardly from said mouth to the upper end of the gripping' member and axially thereoi is a'slot 12 which is narrower in cross section than the diameter of the mouth 11 but of the same length in cross section as said diameter. r.' the junction of the mouth 11 and slet 12 are formed shoulders 13 on opposite sides ot the bore, said shoulders extending' reversely aslant to one another, when viewed from one side, and forming' abutments adapted to eiigan'e the upper end of the head 7 so that, in event oi' the gripping member 1 being' lowered upon the stem 8 with the slot 12 turned crosswise to the elongate head 7, the gripping member 1 will be rotated sufficiently to allow said head to enter the slot 1'9.
The invention operates as follows: rEhe gripping` member 1 will be connected with the lower end orn the pump plunger 3 and, when it is desired to insert the standing valve e in the well, said standing i' "ill be provided with the stem 8 and said willbe inserted in the slot 12 oi the gripping member 1 and then the stanein valve will be rotated suiiiciently to bring th shoulders 9 into the openings Then the stam.- ing' Valve will be lowered to bring' the shoulders 9 to rest upon the abutment i0. Then the plunger with the standing valve s .epended therefrom will be lowered into the pump tubing', not shown, until the standing valve rests upon the seat, not shown, provided for it at the lower end ot the working barrel, not shown.
lVhen the standing' valve strikes the seat, the pump plunger will be lowered farther thus causing' the head 7 to engage the abutment 6 and, owing' toY the abutment 6 beinp; constructed'spirally of the lieinber 1, said ymember will be caused to rotate until the head '7 comes into alinement with the upper portion of the slot 12.
The standing valve Ll may new be hammered securely into its seat by alternatively vbe raised to withdraw the gripping` member 1 from the stein S. The plunger may 'then bevoperated'm theusual manner to effect the pumping operation, the plunger at the lower and ot its Vstroke just clearing the stem 8.
Villien for any reason it becomes desirable to remore the stznnlirnq valve from the well, the pumping' operation will be stopped and the pump plunger will be lowered to cause the gripping member 1 to telescope upon the stem 8. During' this lowering' operation, if the slot 12 happens not to be in perfect alinement with the head 7, the end portions of said head will engage the shoulders 13 and said shoulders, because oi their extending spirally on the inner face of the gripping iember, will cause the gripping member, pump plunger and sucker rod to rotate until the head 7 is so alined with the slot 12 that the head will enter said slot. The pump plunger will then be lowered suiliciently to bring; the openings 5 adjacent to the head 'T and then the st clrer rod, not shown, connecte-:l to the plunger will be turned through an ingle of 9 O to cause the member 1 to be turned so that the head 7 will extend, into the openings 5. Then the plunger will be raised, to cause the abutment-s 10 to engage the 4shoulders i) and to pull. the standing valve 'trom its seat and suspend said valve from the member 1 and stem S. Then the plun- A@Der will be raised from the well to elevate the standing 'valve thus suspended from the plunger.
it is noted that there can be no uncertainty about engaging' and disengaging the stem S with the Atripping niemeer 1, for the i 1 is lowered upen the stem 9 until the inembe rests on the standing' valve 4C as shown in Fig'. 3 and then all that the operator need to do is to give the sucker rod a quarter turn and hoist away on the sucker rod; and when the valve .is being` inserted the ope" tor simply allows the sucker rod to descend until the member 1 strikes upon the seated str ino' valige thus to cause the ailutnients 6 to ride upon the head 7 so as to turn the member 1 to position t'or raising' tree from 'the stem.
rlhe invention is not limited in its broader phases to the details of construction shown in the dra-ii ings and described above, but includes such changes and modifications as lie within the spirit and scope oi? the appended claims.

G. ln a device of the character described, a stein adapted to be connected with a standing valve and havinga shoulder, and a gripping member adapted to be connected with a pump plunger and having an abutment to engage the shoulder to support the stein when the gripping member is turned to one position, the gripping member and stein having means whereby lowering of the gripping member relative to the y.standing valve will turn the gripping member tok another position.
7. in a device of the character described, a stem adapted to be connected with a standing valve and terminating at its upper end in a head and having a shoulder, and a grip ping member adapted to be connected with a pump plunger and having an abutment to engage the shoulder to support the stein i 1- 1 when the gripping memoei is tuineo to one position, the gripping member having a slanting abutment to engage the head when the gripping member is turned to said position and is lowered relative t0 the standing valve.

In adevice of the character described, a stem adapted to be connected with a standing valveand terminating at its upper end in a head and having shoulder, and a gripping member adapted for connection with a pump plunger and having an abutment to engage the shoulder to support the stein Whenthe gripping member is turned to one position, the gripping member having a slanting abutment to engage the head when the gripping member is turned to said position and is lowered-relative to the standing valve, and the gripping member having a 'slot to guide the head to the last named abutment and having a slanting shoulder at the lower end of the slot adapted 'to engage one end of the head when the gripping member is lowered so as to cause turning oit' the gripping member inte alinement with the head.
