BOILER CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lWIar. 1 6, 1920.
Application filed July 17, 1918. Serial H 0. 245,353.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORVILLE F. Bnnnn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of iiaverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boiler Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to connections for domestic boilers which are adapted to be made from without the boiler, the material, of which these boilers are formed, being thin and flexible sheet metal unadapted to receive a screw thread, and which must, therefore, be clamped at opposite sides.
Prior to my invention devices of this character have been produced in which a longitudin lly or axially split nipple is provided which is flanged at one end to engage the inner surface of the boiler, and threaded at the other end to receive the coupling sl but these devices are objectionable on account of the difficulty of holding the sections, into which the nipple is split, in such a position that the screw threads are in line, so as to permit the coupling to be screwed thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of boiler connection which is adapted to be placed in position and connected from outside the boiler, and in which the threaded nipple portion is of one solid piece so that the difiiculty in making the connections, above noted, is avoided, said device being otherwise ada )ted to be easily placed in position.
I accomplish these objects. by the means shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coupling embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an end view, and
Fig. i is a detail view of one of the ring sections which I employ.
As shown in the drawing, the coupling comprises a nipple a, and a coupling sleeve Z), said nipple having one end portion externally threaded and said sleeve having its bore internally threaded correspondingly to receive said nipple. The diameter of the nipple, at its opposite end, is somewhat less than the diameter of the aperture in the boiler :0, in which this end of the nipple is to be inserted, and the exterior surface thereof is formed to taper from said inner eve,
end to the middle portion thereof, providing I a conical facets. A ring is provided which is split axiall and radially and is composed of four sections 0, identical in form, and each extending through a quadrant.
The ring formed by said sections is adapted to fit into the boiler aperture and has a flange c at one end, of substantially greater diameter than the diameter of said aperture, while the bore of said ring is formed to taper from its flanged end, the conical surface thus formed being adapted to fit the tapering surface 0/ of the nipple.
The inner end portion of thesleevc, into which the nipple is adapted to be screwed, is provided with an end flange 6 of diameter than the boiler aperture,
the end face of the sleeve being chambered to receive The bore of a suitable packing washer (Z. the sleeve is also enlarged suiliciently to receive the ring 0, when the parts are in position. The bore of the sleeve at its outer end is threaded to receive a connecting pipe, as indicated.
Each ring section (.1 is provided with reater means to enable the parts to be placed in position in the boiler aperture, and the means which I preferably employ consists of angularly bent, stifi' wires c, one of which is secured in the flanged end of each section, each wire being bent to extend radially of the ring and then at right angles through the ring, adjacent its axial, or central longitudinalline, so that, when the rin sections are in position the axially extent ing portions will lie practically side by side, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
In making the connection with the boiler, the ring sections are first passed separately through the boiler aperture and supported within the boiler by the wires, and then the nipple a is passed onto the wires and into the boiler aperture, so that the enlarged end thereof extends within the boiler. The sections are then drawn into position about the nipple and, with the nipple, are drawn outward until the flange engages the interior wall of the boiler, and the nipple wedges the ring sections into position, so that further withdrawal of the nipple is prevented. These parts are then held in position by the wires while the coupling sleeve is passed thereon, and screwed onto the outer end of the nipple. At the same time, the inner end portion of the sleeve is passed onto the outer end portion of the ring a,
so that the ring sections are held closely against its nipple.
To enable the sleeve to be passed onto the end of the ring Without diiiiculty, in case one or more of the ring sections should swing somewhat out of position, the outer end of the ring is slightly beveled, and the inner end portion of the bore of the sleeve is similarly beveled, as indicated in the drawing. The parts are, however, so formed that, by the time the inner end of the sleeve has been screwed into engagement with the surface of the boiler, the straight portion oi the sleeve will have been passed onto the straight portions of the ring, so that the ring sections will be positively forced into the positions of Fig. 2.
The sleeve will then be screwed firmly against the boiler, so that a tight joint Will be formed therebet-Ween, the nipple being held against rotation, when the sleeve is screwed thereon, by any suitable or convenient means. The holding Wires .2 may be readily removed n any convenient manner,
-,aite r the parts have been screwed together.
The pipe connection may then be made with the outer end of the sleeve, as indicated.
lWith the above described construction a uniform hearing or support is provided at the inner side of the boiler, or tink, which engages the Wall thereof continuously about the aperture therein, so that a tight joint may be formed betiveen the coupling sleeve This is a feature of great practical importance, for the reason that, on account or the thinness of the Wall, it is easily bent, and, if a continuous uniform support is not provided therefor, it will not be held up firmly into engagement with the end oi the sleeve, so
that leakage would be caused.
I claim 1. A boiler connection comprising a nipple having an enlarged inner end portion, adapted to be inserted in the boiler aperture, an axially split ring adapted to encircle said enlarged inner end portion Within the sides of said aperture and having a flanged end adapted to engage the inner surface of the boiler, and coupling sleeve adapted to be threaded on the outer end of the nipple and to seat at its inner end against the outer surface of the boiler.
2. A boiler connection comprising a nipple having an enlarged inner end portion, adapted .to be inserted in the boiler boiler, to form a tight joint therebetiveen.
3. A boiler connection comprising a nipple adapted to be inserted at its inner end, .i the boiler aperture and formed exteriorly to taper from said inner end toward the middle thereof, a ring composed a series of radially divided sections adapted to be interposed between said .nipple and the sides of said aperture and having a tapering bore against which the tapered portion of the nipple is adapted to seat and a projecting flange to engage the interior Wall of the boiler, and a coupling sleeve adapted to be threaded on the outer end portion ofsaid nipple and to seat against the exterior of the boiler.
4. A boiler connection comprising a nipple having an enlarged inner end portion, adapted to be inserted in the boiler aperture, an axially split ring adapted to encircle said enlarged inner end portion within the sides of said aperture and having a flanged end adapted to engage the in nor surface ottlie boiler, and a coupling sleeve adapted to be threaded on the outer end of the nipple and to fit onto the outer end portion of said ring and seat against the outer surface of the boiler to form a Water tight joint therewith.
5. A boiler connection comprising a nipple having an enlarged inner end portion, adapted to be inserted in the boiler aperture, an axially split ring adapted to encircle said enlarged inner end portion Within the sides oi said aperture and having a flanged end adapted to engage the inner surface of the boiler and a coupling sleeve adapted to be threaded on the outer end of the nipple and to seat against the outer surface of the boiler, and temporary supports for each of said ring sections arranged to extend about the inner end of said sleeve and through the bore thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
