bustion engines and has relation more particularly to a. mechanical device of. this general character including a crank supported for both rotary and endwisemovement and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means coacting with said crank to hold the same against retro grade rotation in'the event of a back fire of the motor during a cranking operation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means for holding the crank against rotation in one direction and which means consists of parts which may be readily assembled with respect to the crank without changing the structure thereof or the parts concomitant,

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved starting device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now-proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view, partly in top plan and partly in section, illustrating a starting device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in neutral position, and

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a bearing of a well known type which rotatably supports the starting crank C for an internal combustion engine and which crank is also capable of cndw se movement. The crank C is provided at its .working end with a clutch member M for coaction with the crank shaft S of the internal combustion engine in a conventional manner. The clutch member M is normally maintained free of the shaft S through the instrumentality of the expansible member E, herein disclosed as a coil spring encircling the forward end portion of the crank C with the outer extremity of said spring secured to the crank C and the opposite end portion engaging an abutment which will hereinafter be more particularly referred'to.
1 denotes an elongated sleeve surrounding the crank 'G in advance of the bearing B.
The inner end portion of the sleeve 1 is provided with the opposite directed ears 2 with which coact certain of the holding bolts for the bearing B and whereby the sleeve 1 is maintained in working position.
The inner'en'd portion of the sleeve 1 has its bore enlarged, as at 3, to accommodate the outstanding annular ratchet t, carried by the inner end portion of a clutch member 5 including the beveled teeth 6. The clutch member 5 is loosely mounted on the crank C and the teeth 6 thereof intermesh with the similarly beveled teeth 7 of a clutch member 5' carried by the crankO and when said crank C is ,operatively engaged through the clutch member M with the crank shaft S. The clutch member 5 is also arranged within the sleeve 1 and said sleeve is of such length to house the clutch member 5 when the crank C is in either working or release position.
The outer end of the sleeve 1 is provided with a head 8 preferably integral therewith and which is provided with a suitable opening 9 for the passage of the crank C. This head 8 constitutes the abutment hereinbefore referred to and with which the inner end of the expansible member or spring E engages for maintaining the crank 0 normally free of the shaft S. The inner end of the sleeve 1 is closed by the annular memher or Washer 10 loosely surrounding the crank C and snugly fitting with the enlarged inner end portion 3 of the sleeve. The head 8 and the member or washer 10 serve to maintain the bore of sleeve 1 substantially dust proof so that no hindrance or interference is offered to the desired operation of the parts.
Depending from the enlarged portion or inner extremity of the sleeve 1 and in communication with the bore'thereof, is a tubular member 11 having its lower or outer end 7 closed by a removable plug 12. Mounted for rectilinear movement within the member 11 is a dog or pawl is constantly urged into engagementwith the ratchet t by the 'expansible member or spring 15 interposed between the dog or pawl 14: and the plug 12.
When the crank G is-in working engagement with the shaft S and under normal conditions, the interlocking clutch members :strncted in accordance with an embodiment 0;? my invention is part cularly well adapted for use by reason of theconvenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from theprinciples and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with the crank shaft of an internal combustion engine, a casing, an endwlse movable starting crank extending through said casing and cooperatingrwith the crank shaft, a clutch member fixed to said crank within the casing, a clutch member freely mounted on said shaft wltlnn the casing, said clutch members being arranged to ntermesh, the periphery of said second mentioned clutch remote from the teeth thereof incli'iding a ratchet therearonnd, a pawl slidable in said casing for engagement with the ratchet to preventreverse rotation of said second mentioned clutch and means on said crank exterior of said casing to manually hold the clutch members disengaged, said ratchet cooperating with a recess 111 said ca ing to prevent slidable move ment of said second mentioned clutch longitudinally of the crank.
