Be it known that I, \VILLIAM D. HArxEs, a citizen of the United States, residing in Haddonfield, Camden county, State of New Jersey, have invented Furrowing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Qne object of my invention is to improve the detail construction of that class of machines commonly employed for harrowing or for forming furrows for the reception of -vide an improved device for connecting a harrow or furrowing disk to its supporting structure with a view to permitting of the convenient adjustment of said disk about a substantially vertical axis in order to vary the width of the furrow formed.
I also desire to provide novel means for adjustably mounting the supporting wheels of a furrowing machine or harrow ;the invention contemplating the provision of a novel device for swinging the frame of the machine and with it the furrowing disks about the axis of said wheels with a view to varying the depth of the furrow formed.
These objects and other advantageous ends I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 4 is a vertical section through one of the disks and its hub, illustrating the detail construction of the various parts.
In the above drawings 1 represents a pair of traction wheels each having on its tread a central, radially projecting flange 2 designed to cut into the earth to prevent sidewise movement of the machine. justed and thereafter retained in any given position by collars 4, of which there are a pair for each wheel.
At the ends of said shaft 3 are fixed rearwardly projecting frame members 5 whose rear ends are bolted or riveted to and serve as supports for a pair of angle irons 6 arranged with two of their webs parallel and spaced apart to provide a long transversely extending uide or clamping structure. Also engaging t e axle 3 and extending forwardly therefrom is a central bar 7 and two side bars 8 whose front ends are connected to a transversely extending frame member 9, the central bar 7 being also extended to the rear of said axle and having branches 10 whose rear ends are rigidly connectedto the angles 6 constituting the guideway.
This rearward extension serves to support a drivers seat 11 and its forward portion 7 has fixed to it an upwardly projecting toothed quadrant 12 to whose lower portion is pivoted a controlling lever 13. The latter carries a latch 14: operated through a link 16 from a handle 15 at the upper end of the lever. A cross bar 9 is provided with a pair of eye-bolts 17 engaged .by two other eyebolts 18, mounted on a second transverse bar 19 similar to and parallel with the cross bar 9 and a tongue 20 extends forwardly from the central part of this second bar, to which it is braced by inclined members 21. At a ment being such that the swinging of said lever on its pivot causes the frame formed by the members 7, 9, 8, 3, 5 and 6 to turn on the axis of the shaft 3 and thereby raise or lower the furrowing or harrowing disks 25 which are carried by the guide 6.
To obtain this object I connect to said guide 6-6, any desired or suitable number of downwardly extending hangers 26, forming the upper end of each of the latter with a circular portion 40 having on its upper face a series of radial teeth designed to cooperate with and be locked by similar teeth on a washer or pad 27 of wedge shaped section. Each of the hangers may be rigidly connected to the guide 66 by means of bolts 28 extending through the slot thereof and are each suspended from a plate 29 whose upper surface is grooved to fit onto the top edges of the parallel upwardly projecting webs of the guide members 66.
Obviously when the holding nuts of these bolts 28 are loosened, each of the latter with the plate 29 and the hanger 26, may be moved along the guide 6-6 to any position and thereafter said hanger may be turned about the bolt as an axis so as to set its disk in a plane at any desired angle to the line of movement of the machine. For connecting the disks to their hangers, I provide each of them with a central. hub or boss in which is cast a, central spindle 30 projecting from approximately half its length beyond the convex face of said disk. Said boss or hub is counter-bored concentrically with this spindle for the reception of one end of a sleeve 31 formed with a projecting lug 32 designed to fit between the flanges of the channel shaped hanger 26 to which it may be rigidly connected by a bolt 33. The spindle 30 is held in the sleeve 31 by a pin In addition to the above parts I provide a laterally extending marking arm 35 connected to the base of the standard 22 by a horizontally extending pivot bolt 36 which will permit of its being projected horizontally at either side of the machine and swung in a vertical plane from one side to the other. This bar is braced to the tongue by a link 37. so connected as to permit of the above noted adjustment, and it is preferably provided at its outer end with an extension arm 38, whose outer extremity carries a vertically extending marking finger 39. The latter is preferably adjustable in a clamp so that its projection below or on either side of said arm may be varied at will.
Under conditions ofuse the traction wheels are set 'on the axle 3 at any distance apart suitable for operation on a given piece of work and are retained in these positions by the collars at. If the machine is to be used for furrowing). asuitable number of hangers 26 is connected to the guide 6 -6 at the dcsired distances apart and the disks carriedup or down about the shaft 3 to cause the disks 25 to make furrows of the desired depth. The arm 3538 is also swung down to its horizontally extended position so that the marking finger 39 will form a shallow furrow or line on the surface of the earth parallel with and at a definite distance from the furrow formed by the nearest one of the disks 25, thus providing a guide whereby the driver of the machine may properly locate the latter in making the next series of furrows. 7
It is to be noted that the toothed block interposed between the circular toothed top portion e0 of the hanger 26 and the rear frame members is preferably made wedgeshaped in section so that even though said frame members be normally in an upwardly tilted position, the hanger 26 is retained in a substantially vertical line as it is adjusted about the bolt '28 to turn its disk from the position shown in Fig. 2, into other positions at an angle thereto.
lVhile I have referred to my machine as designed for furrowing and have designated the disks 25 as furrowing elements, it will be understood that the novel features of the frame and hangers may be advantageously employed in machines employing harrow teeth or cultivator blades inplace of the convex disks shown and it is intended that the term furrowin elements shall be inangle irons fixed to said frame members and extending parallel to. the axle to the rear of the same and beyond said frame members; furrowing elements mounted on the angle irons; a frame structure extending forwardly from the axle; a tongue attached to said frame structure; and a seat on said structure.
