I IN VEN TOR. W I TNESSES:
ATTORNEY.
gary, and a resident of the city of Chicago,
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
IVAN ROI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
EARRING-MACHINE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IVAN RoIC,a subject of theA Emperor of Croatia Austria Huncounty of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvekments in Barking-Machines,` of which` the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in barking machines adapted to' remove the bark from the sections of logs and has for its object the provision of an improved conoperation.
The lnvention consists 1n the comblnations struction of this character which Ihas efficient and arrangements of parts hereinafter de.
' partially in elevation, of a barking machine embodying my invention, n
Fig. 2, a ltransverse section ofthe same, and v Fig. 3,a top plan view of the same. d The preferred form of construction as 'illustrated in the drawings comprises an open work barking drum made up of a plurality of sets of longitudinalangle irons 5 and 6 arranged to alternate with each other wit-hone of their legs arranged circumferenvtially or on the periphery of the drum and the other legs kprojecting at an acute angle inwardly with 'reference to the. peripher The upwardly projecting legs 0f the ang e irons 5 are,l materially longer. than the corresponding legs of the angle irons 6 .asy
shown. lthis arrangement the high points or roughprotuberances onthe lo s orv blocks to be treated will be treated by t e shorter legs of an le irons 6, whi1'e the main body or more uni orm portions thereof'are `simultaneously treated by the adjacent angle `irons 5, thus addin materially to the eHiciency of the machine. -The angle irons 5 and 6 are arranged to alternate with. each other and are secured in position by means of annular angle irons 7 riveted thereto, spaces being left between said angle irons 5 and 6 to form an open workdrum to permit of the ready circulation of water therethrough. At intervals bearing rings 8 are secured to the periphery of the drum between adjacent angle iron rings 7, saidv rings 4Specification of Letters Patent.
"10 being driven throngl traversing the lower portion ofla suitable vat or vessel 11 forcontaining the-usual water used in the barkin process, said shaft li the medium of a pulley 12 arran ed on t e outside ofthe vat 11. Additiona hanged. rollers 13 are arranged at'the opposite sides of the vat`11 vvon suitable shaft-s 14 to contact with the rings 8 slightly 4below the horizontal diametric Patented Mar. 16,1920.v Application led February 16, 19117. Serial No. 149,104.
plane ofpthe barking drum, said'rollers 13 thus serving to partially support the drum and also. to-.rpositlon the same centrally over `barking drum is provided shaft 1'0. he centrall vwith an annular gear 15 secured to the periphery. thereof-between two of the annular angle irons 7, vsaid gear meshing with the pinion 16 secured to shaft 10.` By this arrangement it will be\ observed that .the barking drum isgiven a sort of a floating bearing on the vat'vll. and may be rotated with the expenditure of a minimum amount ofower.
The .-bar 'ngV drum is further stiHened `and strengthened by means ofV peripheral in the usual manner.
yThe vat 11 is providedr centrally with a depression or well 20 into;v which the removed and pulverized bark, fibers and particles'will be deposited and an inclined trough or chute 21 leads upwardly and latment it will be seen that the bark removedfrom the log sections will gather and settle in the well 20 and will be removed therefrom by the .action lof conveyer 22 inde endent of the actlon of the barking drum, t us accomplishing such removal with great thoroughness and efficiency. When desired the well 2O may be readily drained and cleaned.-
While I haveillustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying variation and modification without departmy invention into effect, thisvis Capable of ing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore. do not wish to belimlted to prev cise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appendedclaims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters table drum having Walls thereof formed of longitudinal angle irons having one of their legs larranged circumferentially and the other legs projecting inwardly, and said inwardly projecting legs being arranged lin alternating sets of differentheights, substantially as described.
3. A barking machine comprising a vrotatable drum having walls thereof formed of longitudinal angle irons having one of their legs arranged circumferentially and the other legs projecting inwardly at an acute angle, and said inwardly projecting legs being arr nged in alternating sets of different heights, substantially as described.
t. A barking machine comprising a rotatable drum having' annular angle irons dening the circumference thereof, and longitudinal angle irons having oneof their legs secured'to the inner edgesA of said annular irons, the other legs of said longitudinal irons projecting inwardly at an acute angle, said inwardly projecting legs being arranged in alternating sets of different height-s, substantially as described.
5. A barking machine comprising a drum; supporting rollers positioned substantially centrally under said drum and contacting with the periphery thereof; and positioning rollers on each side of said drum arranged to hold the same in position on said supporting rollers, substantially as described.
G. A barking machine comprising a drum; supporting rollers positioned substantially centrally under said drum and contacting with the periphery thereof; positioning'rollers on each side of said druln arranged to hold the same in position on said supporting rollers; and means engaging the periphery of said drum for rotating the same, substantiall)7 as described.
7. A barking vmachine -comprising any and carrying flanged rollers engaging said bearing rings; additional flanged rollers arranged on opposite sidesof said drum and bearing against said rings; an annular gear arranged centrally on said drum; and a pinion on said driving shaft meshing with said annular gear, substantially as described.
8. A barking machine comprising an openwork drum made up of a plurality of sets of longitudinally arranged angle irons secured together 'by 'annular angle irons riveted thereto; bearing rings secured at intervals around the periphery of said drum; a driving shaft Varranged under said drum and carrying flznged rollers'engaging said bearing rings; additional flanged'rollers arranged on opposite sides of said drum and bearing against said rings; an annular gear arranged centrally on said drum; a pinion on said driving shaft meshing with said annular gear; a vat` partially inclosing and supporting said drum and provided centrally in the bottom thereof -with a `well; and an endless ch'ain conveyor leadingfrom 'said well, substantially as described.
9. A barking machine comprising an openwork drum made up of a plurality of sets of longitudinally ar 'anged angle irons secured together by annular angle irons riveted thereto, said longitudinal angle irons being arranged in alternating sets having inwardly projecting legs of dlfferent heights; bearing rings secured at intervals around the periphery of said drum; a. driving shaft arranged under said drum and carrying flan ed rollers engaging said bearing rings; additional flanged rollers ar a-nged on opposite sides of said drum and bearing against said rings an annular gear arranged centrally on said c rum; and a pinion on said driving shaft meshing With said annular gear, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. f
IVAN RCIG. Witnesses:
