VvBe it known that I, GEORGE C. Ranma citizen kof the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in MetalMelting Furnaces, of which the following isa specificavtion. f
` This invention relates to metal melting furnaces and consists in Certain improvements in the constructionA thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the Claims. The invention is illustrated-in the accompanying drawings as follows j Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the furnace, partly in section Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. 1 marks the furnace chamber, 2 the shell of the furnace, 3 the bottom plate, and 4 Trunnions 5 are ar' ranged on the shell r,and these are supported in bearings in the ysupporting posts` 6. This meshes a gear 8, the gear having the operating handles ,9., A locking pawl 10 `operates onthe gear 8 and is provided with a pedal 1'1 bymeans of which the pawl may be withdrawn from the gear to permit the swinging of the furnace. On thelrelease of the pedal the pawl engages the gear '8 in the usual. manner. Fuel is delivered to the furnaceV through one of the trunnions by means of a et 12 and .air `is delivered in proper proportion 'through the pipe 13. The inoducts of combustion pass out through the pipe 14. This pipe extends into-"a telescoping pipe 15V which may be removed to 'permit the swinging of the furnace. A supporting block 16 projects upwardly from the botpost 17 extending up through the block. This post isV screw threaded and the screw operates in the screw threaded opening 18 in the bottom. The projecting block is formed of refractory material around the metal post. A plate 19 preferably of-asbestos is arranged on` top of the post and a Crucible 20 rests on this plate. In use the crucibles are of somewhat varying height and as the top edges disintegrate it' is de',- sirable to vary the height of the support. This is accomplished in the present instance by the adjustment of the post 17 by means of the screw thread heretofore described.` As theV post is raised washer-like plates 21 are placed vover the post so as to build up the block around the post.

In order to` maintain the post and support# ingV block in a cool condition'I prefer yto deliver air to the metallic portion of the post.- This may be done through a flexible tubing 22 which terminates yat the bottom of the' post 17. The air may be discharged through the openings 23 which are controlled by av shutter valve 241, or, if desired especially if solid fuel is used as a substitute for the --liquid fuel through the jet 12 the air may 'be deliveredv through radial openings 251y these extending through the metallic post Y and the refractory material around the post. f

terial and has an opening 27. The Cover is adapted to make a comparatively close fit with the Crucible when the support 17 is properly adjusted. The cover is ordinarily provided with the'lips 28 which extend over the eye 29 on the case 2 and the bolts 30 eX- tend through these lips. By removing the bolt at either side the other side may be usedv vas a hinge so as to swing the cover to open l position, or both bolts may be removed and the cover lifted as a whole.
The supporting block should be projected sufficiently high to provide a reservoir around its outer surface ofsuffcient capacity v`to hold the metal which is melted in the` Crucible so that if there is an accidental breaking of the Crucible this metal may bereceived byfthis reservoir and may be poured from the furnace itself so that the heat need not be lost.A
By maintaining 4the crucible support ina cool 'condition it does not ltend to disintegrate as where it is subjected to the intensekheat and further there is not the tendency for the metal if there is any dropped into the bottom of the furnace to adhere to the support and this is particularly advantageous with the tilting furnace because thebottom may be entirely closed and still the discharge of the metal from the furnace when it isv tilted fairly well assured.
It will be observed that it is possible to utilize thefurnace itself as a melting pot. Certain metals may be melted in the furnace in theV circular chamber around the supporting block at the same time metal isl melted in the Crucible. When this is done it is desirable to have the projection high enough' if the crucible breaks the metal therein may be contained in the chamber around the sup ort.
Vhat I claim as new is l. In a metal melting furnace, the combination of a tilting metal furnace chamber with a closed bottom; and aci'ucible support projecting upwardly from `the bottom of the furnace a sufficient height to provide a reservoir surrounding the support equal in capacity to a crucible adaptedfto rest on the support within the furnace and to position :the top of lthe crucible relatively to the top of the furnace toclose the Crucible.

In a metal melting furnace, the combination of, a tilting metal furnace chamber; a Crucible support projecting upwardly from the bottoni of the furnace a cover for the furnace;rmeans for adjusting the support so as to adjust the top of the crucible with relation to the cover to lform a closure between the cover and the Crucible; means for inducing combustion inthe furnace; and a flue extending from the furnace for dis- .charging the products of combustion.v
