ROAD-GRADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 4, 1919. Serial No. 342,494.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hettinger, in the county of Adams and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in road graders and more particularly to an attachment therefor for shaping a gutter alongside a roadway.
The primary object is to provide an extremely simple and practical device of this character so constructed and mounted as to properly shape or out a gutter and to be capable of adjustment to various angles as required by circumstances.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
I attain these objects by constructing the grader as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a top plan view of the attachment mounted on a grader;
Fig. 2, is a detail side elevation of the attachment in operation;
Fig. 3, is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4:, is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5, is a cross-section showing a gutter before and after cutting with my attachment.
Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts throughout the several Views.
Reference is now had to the drawing in which the attachment is shown carried-by a scraper blade S mounted on a road grader frame F, said frame and scraper blade being of the usual or any preferred construc. tion. The end of the scraper blade S positioned adjacent the outside of the road to be graded is vertical or cut at right angles to the length of the scraper blade.
My attachment comprises a short length of suitable metal 1, curved in the usual manner and carrying on its lower edge a removable cutting blade 2 secured in place by bolt 3'or the like fasteners. The inner end of the attachment to be hereinafter referred to as an auxiliary cutter blade, is cut obliquely to the length of the blade, said inner end being adapted to be positioned'in parallel relation to said vertical end of the blade S and connected theretoby hinges of any suitable construction, but preferably the type about to be set forth.
In mounting the auxiliary blade 1 on the scraper blade S a pair of vertically spaced hinges 4 is empfoyed, the two halves carried by the blade S, comprising singlestrips 5 of metal removably secured thereto by bolts 6 and extending longitudinally in parallel relation with the scraper blade edges and beyond the vertical end of said blade. The outer ends of the strips are bent to Patented Mano, 1920.
form loops 7 adapted to be alined with similar loops 8 formed on the outer ends of metal strips 9 and bolted or otherwise secured thereto.
The last named strips 9 do not project beyond the inner end of the auxiliary blade,
ut are bent near the free ends and spaced from the blade and then bent to form the loops 8, said spacing being necessary to permit close spacing of the two. blades as shown in Fig. 3.
For the purpose of holding the auxiliary blade in any of its adjusted positions, I secure adjacent the outer end of the auxiliary blade, an eye bolt 10 in which is adapted to be fastened a chain 11 or other similar element, the other end of which may be adjustably connected to a pin or bolt 12 carried by the frame F. I
It is well known that the ordinary grader cannot grade a roadway and at the same time out a suitable ditch or gutter and therefore requires several trips over a single stretch of road before the desired results are attaineds This attachment when mounted on an ordinary scraper will cut the wall of a gutter as shown in Fig. 2 and due to the hinged connection the auxiliary blade may be adjusted to change its angle according to the demands.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
I claim:
In a road grader of the class described, the combination with portable frame carrying a transverse scraper blade having one vertical end; of an auxiliary blade having one end cut oblique to the length of the blade, said oblique end being disposed parallel with said vertical end and hingedly connected thereto, said auxiliary blade extending outwardly and upwardly from the first named blade to cut one side of a gutter,
said auxiliary blade being movable on itslli hinges to vary the cutting angle thereof, and a chain connecting the outer end of said auxiliary blade and the frame to retain said blade in its adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I have my hand in-the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN M. MONROE. Witnesses:
F. M. JAoKsoN, P. W. BOCHEN.
