Application filed February 12, 1919. Serial N o.
1 b all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES FRANKLIN PERRY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident ofHarlingen, in the county of Cameron and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canal-Gates, of which the follow ing is a specification. V
This invention relates to flume or canal I gates and particularly to a gate which can be readily applied to or removed from a lock of a flume or canal, the said device being of such a nature that it will be held closed by the force of the water in addition to the mechanical features of construction which causes it to seat in the opening of the lock.
An object of this invention is to provide a lockof the character indicatedhaving a simple and comparatively inexpensive .contrivance for receiving a handle or the shank of the handle which is attached to the lock or gate, the said handle projecting upwardly so that it can be manipulated for applying or removing said gate.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and'claimed. v
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a. sectional view of a flume or water way with the lock in'place; and y Fig. 2 illustrates an end view thereof at the intake end.
In these drawings 5 denotes a hollow member which may be round or any cross sectional configuration, the same having a flange 6 at one end, which flange constitutes in part an anchorage for a loop comprising a strip of material 7 having apertures 8 for the reception of fastenings such as rivets 9 by which it is secured to the flange, the said plate having an outwardlyturned portion v Specification of Letters Patent.
tion 17 of the Patented" Mar. 9, 1920.
formingia loop 10 which is adapted to receive ashank 11 of a handle 12, the said handle being securedto the gate 13 of the canal lock by a metallic strapl i which may be attached to the gate 13 by fastenings such as rivets 15.
As shown in Fig; 1, of the drawing, the
lower part ofthe handle is cut away to form a shoulder 16' which fits the contour of the outer surface of the gate and the shank of the said handle lies against the outer surface of the flange of the gate and projects therebeyond into the seat therefor carried by the flange 6.
From an inspection of the drawing, it will i be apparent that by manipulating the handle and forcing the gate away from the end of the casing 5, the inwardly extending portion of the gate may be made to clear the end of the casing and the shank of the handle may then be lifted from its seat, thus removing the gate and opening the flume or canal, whereas in replacing the gate, the shank of the handle may be applied to its seat and the force ofthe fluid will hold it in place, although the parts are so fitted together that there is some frictional contact for engagement between the inwardly extending porgate and the inner wall of the casing.
While I have shown the gate; as being round. or circularit is to be understood that it may be square or of other configuration in 3 prising a plate having a depressed portion fitting in the casing, and a flange over-lying a portion of the flange of the casing, aihani dle secur'edto the said closure, said handle having relatively wide portion terminating in a reduced end, the said reduced end extending over the flange of the closure and into the strap secured to the flange of the casing. g CHARLES FRANKLIN PERRY.
