Description

F. w. SCHUMACHEB. WIRE STRETCHEH ATTACHMENT. APPLICATTON F-ILED JUNE 7, I919.
1,333,097. Patented Mar. 9,1920.
' residing at Shawano, in tlie county of Shawano and State of Wisconsin, have in- To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, FRANK W. Sonn MAOHER, a citizen of the United States,
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-StretcherAttachments;ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire stretchers, and more particularly to attaching means therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide eflicient attaching means for connecting a wire stretcher to around support.
Another object is to so construct such a device that it may be used effectively on posts of varying sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter'described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scopeof what is claimedwithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the device constituting this invention shown applied,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is in enlarged detail perspectii e view of the attachment detached.
The attachment constituting this invention comprises a curved plate 1 having two series of penetrating elements 2 and 3 on its inner face, said elements being shown in the form of spurs, and those of one series being in circumferential alinement with each other and longitudinally alined with those of the other series, the spurs of series 2 being numbered 4, and three ofwhich are shown. three similar series 3, (see Fig. 3).
.An apertured ear 6 extends from one side spurs 5 being shown in edge of the plate l preferably midway its ends, and in a plane between the series of spurs 2 and 3. A hook 7 projects from the other side edge of plate 1 at a point opposite v the ear 6 and is designed to detachablv engage one of the links of a chain 8 which is permanently secured at one end to the apertured ear 6.. This chain 8 is designed to s peci'ii cati on of Letters Iatent. v
pass around one side "of the post P to that-on whichthe plate 1 is'arranged, as is shown clearly in Fig. 2, andwhen it has forced between the chain and the clamplngly engage plate I with the post'and to cause the spurson' its inner face to penetrate the post as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.1 A peripherally grooved pulley 10 is rotatably mounted between two bracket arms 11 5" and 12 which project laterally from the outer face of plate 1. This pulley 10 is designed to receive the wire W to a portion of which is engaged with. a stretcher S of anysuitable construction.
By arranging the spurs 4 and 5 on the curved inner face of plate 1, this attaching device may be used in connection with round posts ofvarying'sizes, for instance, if the casting or plate 1 is constructed to fit snugly around a six and a half inch post, all six of the points 4 and 5 will contact with the 7 post at the same time, and will penetrate the body thereof when pressure is brought to bear onthe stretcher. 7 ing be used on a five inch post, the center spurs 4 and 5 will penetrate the post while the spurs on opposite sidesthereof, will simply contact therewith and operate as steadying devices. be applied to a seven inch post, the end spurs ofthe series will beforced into the post until the center spurs contact with it,
and they operate as steadying means when so used. It willthus be seen that a'single casting may be used on round posts, varying from five to eight inches in diameter, more or less. 7
In using this device, the wire Wis run along one side of the fence to which it is to be secured and is passed around the pul ley 10 to the wire stretcher S on the other side of the post P, and this stretcher is then actuated in the the wire.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of V the method of operation will be readily apordinary manner to tighten parent to those skilled in the art to which 105 the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I Patented Mar. 9,,192 Application filed June'7, 1919; Seria1N '0. 3O2,6 2 3i opposed 55 i be stretched, I
Now, if this same cast- 80 Should this same plate 86 now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Anattachment of the class described comprising a curved plate having longitudinally spaced circumferentially arranged series of penetrating elements on its inner face, those in one series being 111 circumferential ahnement wlth each other and 1n longitudinal alinement with those of the other series, and means for connection with a chain carried by the side edges of said plate at points between the series of pene- 7 rating elements so that pressure brought to bear by said chain will uniformly force said elements into operative position. i p
2. An attachment of the class described comprising a circumferentially curved plate having longitudinally spaced circumferential series of spurs on its inner face, a chain connected with one side edge of said plate at a point between said series of spurs and detachably engaged with the other a side edge, and'a wire receiving pulley mounted on the outer face of said plate at the'center thereof. V J a In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
v FRANK w. SCHUMACHER.
