I FLYING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GIUSEPPE CAunls'rnA, a citizen of the United States, residing at -'-.&B1OI1X, in the county of'Bronx and State of New 'York, Improvements in Flying-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
:Thisinvention relates to flying machines of the triplane type, and its object is to provide a machine of this character which possesses increased efficiency, combining therewith a novel form of under carr1age,providing the under-carriage with a'- central boat arranged in vertical alinement with the body and further, the provision of side balancing floats, said boat and floats arranged with due a maximum load carrying capacity, body being also designed and provided Wlth regard to the plane surfaces and the machine thus balanced to effect proper stabilization.
1 Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a body constructipn having the said fuel tanks arranged side by side'so as to provide an intervening air channel therebetween for the purpose of reducing head resistance, while providing an arrangement of the tanks whereby large supplies of fuel can be carried.
A still further object of the invention resides in the novel construction of a flying machine body, the same including a frame having a buoyant boat-like base, a plurality of over-lying passenger accommodating cabins, an interposed deck between the cabins, and power plants supported by said deck, the deck sectio'nof the frame being formed with proper regard to the: vertical center of the structure sov as to give proper balance to the machine when in flight.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel body and plane construction, and means for bracing and connecting the plane surfaces with respect to the body.

frame of suitable material, the same including a hull section 11, at the base of the frame, an over-lying cabin section 12, a rectangular deck 13, fuel tanks 14-14, supported upon the deck respectively at the opposite sides of the longitudinal center 1 thereof, and a second cabin section 15, overlying said fuel tanks.
The hull section 11 preferably includes transverse arched bars 16, a keel forming bar 17, side bars 18-18, the latter having connection with the arched bars 16, a central reinforcing bar 19, and vertical braces 20 between the keel bar 17 and said upper bar 19. It will of course be understood that the hull section is to be provided with any suitable well known covering such as shown The cabin section 12 consists of vertical bars- 22 which extend between the hull section and the deck 13, intermediate side bars 23, side bars 24-24 and arched braces or top bars 25, the branches of said arched bars having connection with the side bars and as illustrated the vertices of said branches. are connected with the said deck 13. The cabin is also provided with a suitable covering 26.
vBetween the boat section 11 and the sides of'the deck 12 are angularly disposed brace bars 27. At each corner of the rectangular deck 13 is a power plant 28, the same being mounted in a suitable housing 29. The fuel tanks 14-14 which rise from the deck are spaced apart to provide an intermediate air channel 30 therebetween so as to reduce head resistance when the machine is in flight.
Cross bars 31 extend horizontally between the tanks 14-14 and supported from said cross bars is the mentioned upper cabin 15. At each end of said upper cabin is a power plant 32. It will of course be understood that the deck 12 may be provided with suitable'flooring as shown at 33.
a The body construction previously referred to is used principally in connection with heavier than air machines of the triplane type and as illustrated, the intermediate plane surface 34 has its inner ends secured to the body at a point preferably above the 7 fuel tanks 14-14. Suitable guy wires 43 are connected between the hull like base of the body and the lower plane surface. Adjustable guy wires 44 are also arranged between the braces 41 and the upper c bin section 15 of the machine.
The hull section of the machine is supported from an under-carriage 45 which includes a front wheeled axle 46 an'd a rear wheeled axle 47. The boat-like base of the machine is provided with a rudder 48rwhich is so disposed as the water when the machine is afloat whereby the machine can be properly guided. The latter also serves to permit the machine to be properly steered while in flight. A-
controlling mechanism 49 for the latter includes a suitable actuating shaft 50. A flying machine body comprising a frame having a longitudinally arranged cabin section and an over-lyin deck, and fuel tanks supported by the eck respectively at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of said cabin section so as to provide an intervening air channel between said tanks, and power plants supported by the deck at the corners thereof.

A flying machine comprising abody having a centrally disposed boat structure, a deck over-lying the boat structure, a plurality of plane surfaces secured to the body, braces between the boat structure, and the deck, the lower plane surface, pontoons supported by said lower plane surface and braces between said lower plane surface and the deck, said braces terminating at their lower ends at points adjacent to said pontoons.
