Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,271, dated November 19, 1872; antedated November 18, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN THOMPSON, of the city of Brooklyn, in Kings county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Cartridge-Extractors, applicable to Breech-Loading Ordnance, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is designed to facilitate the extraction of the cartridge-shell from breechloading ordnance after the breech-block has been removed from its position for firing and consists in a novel arrangement of a springborne lever to be operated by a spring borne percussion-rod.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of the breech portion of a gun with my invention applied; and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, the breechblock in each figure being removed.
The same letters indicate like parts in both figures, and. in which- A represents the body of the gun; B, its bore or barrel; 0, the springborne lever; and
D, the percussion rod, by which the lever G is operated and caused to extract the cartridge by its underlapping of the flanged end of the latter. E is the breech-block holder, constructed in a similar manner to that described in my applications for Letters Patent, which were allowed March 28, and April 12, 1872, respectively, and therefore need no further descrip tion here.
The operation of this extractor will be apparent from the drawing, the breech-block being rolled aside to clear the flange of the cartridge-case, in which position it is retained by the screw G, and the spring-rod D, being sudnance, the cartridge extractor herein described, consisting of the combination of the spring-borne lever O and percussion-rod D,
when arranged for operation substantially as set forth.
NATHAN THOMPSON.
