TELEPHONE-DIRECTORY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920;
Application filed March 6, 1919. Serial No. 280,975.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. CHESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone-Directory Devices, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful `improvements in telephone directory deprovided with Vradial spaces for writing therein the names of parties frequently called' or whose names and numbers are. de sired for a particular urpose. A correlated disk cover by the rst disk is exposed Sufficient of the second disk is exposed to contain. a telephone number. The name disk is fixed' while the number disk is rotatable. An indicator carried by the number disk overhangs the name spaces Vof the'name disk and by rotating the number disk so that the indicator is brought to a name the number of this party is displayed through the slot or if the number has not been written on its disk it may be written and will be displayed at future operations.
It will be at once apparent that by the use of two disks a greater number of names may be written o-n the name disk as no space is necessary for the numbers whlch are written separately .on the number disk. The diameter of the device may be kept within reason by the use of two disks and some: spare is left on the naine disk for other. purposes.-
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciication and by `reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Figure 1 is a front` elevation of the device Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a diametrlcal sectional view or the device showing it fastened on a trans-r mitter by the mouth-piece.
1n the drawings the numeral 10 designates anannularmetal frame having an open face and quadrilateral ribsll bisected by an integral ring 12 and radiating from a central rlng 13. This provides four segmental openings 14 between the `ring 12 and the margin of the frame and a similar number of openings 15 ybetween the rings. The ring 13 has a collar 16 within the frame. A name disk 17 of cardboard or other suitable material is fitted snugly into the frame so as `to surround the collar and fit the inner face of the annular flange 18 of the frame, which face may be suitably roughened for this purpose. The face of the disk is thus displayed at the openings 14 and l5. Within the openings 14 the disk 17 is provided with radial Spaces or panels 17; while within the openings 15 advertising or other matter may be p rmted.
A circular metal back plate 19 is mounted to rotate on the collar 16 within the frame and is provided with four equally spaced lugs 20 `which overhang the flange 18 and bent upon themselves with their ends' 21 bearing on the margin of the face of frame and serving to hold the frame.
and the back plate together. One of the lugs carries an index 22 on its end 21 adapted to register with the spaces 17. The collar 16 may be secured to a transmitter A by a mouth-piece B, thus holding the frame and name disk 17 stationary. Each lug 20v serves as a finger rest for the operator who uses the most convenient one and pulls down thereon to rotate the back plate 19.
A number disk 23 of substantially the same diameter as the disk 17 is, fastened to the inner `face of the plate by bending opposed ears 24 over the same. This disk 23 is rotated with the plate. The right hand rib 11 has a slot 25 in its portion separating the adjacent openings 14. The disk 17 alsohas a slot 26 registering with the slot 25. The disk 23 is thus visible through the slots and is used for telephone numbers.P
1n arranged or preparing the disks the name of a. party as J. Doe is written im one of the spaces 17 and the plate 19 rotated so as to bring the index 22 to register with this space as is shown in Fig.,1. The number of this party which may be M-348 is written on the number disk 23 through the slots. Other names and num bers are written in the same manner. it is obvious that when a number is wanted it is Las;
merely necessary to rotate the plate until the index registers With the space bearing the name of the party, whereby the disk 23 is rotated to brlng the number into view through the slots. Names and numbers may be added as desired. By bending the lugs 20 and ears 24: the parts may be disassembled and new names and number disks inserted. The three ribs 11 other than -that having the slot 25 may contain the emergency calls, such as the fire department, ambulance and police, or some other special designation, the number being printed on the disk 23 so as to appear through the slots.
What I claim, is:
In a telephone directory device; an outer relatively stationary frame embodying an outer ring carrying a laterally extending flange, an inner hub to be clamped to the transmitter ofthe telephone, and radial ribs connecting thel hub and outer ring, said radial ribslforming segmental name openings, and one radial rib being provided with a number opening; a name disk adapted to be held stationary Within the outer frame by engaging Within the annular flange thereof, said name disk being adapt'- ed to be removed when desired and having portions for receiving names which are visible through the name openings, said name disk being provided with a number opening in registration with the rst named num- -ber opening; a back plate having an openlng to pivotally receive the hub of the outerl frame so that such back plate may be turned with relation thereto, the back plate being spaced from the name disk, said back plate being provided at its periphery with radial lugs bent to form sockets which slidably embrace the flange of the outer frame, one
socket havlng a polnter to coactwvith the` name disk; and a number disk arranged within thelange of the outer frame and sei i cured to the back plate for .rotation therewith, said number disk having numbers to be brought to a position to' be viewed through said number openings.
In testimony whereof I aiix mysignature.
FRANK R. CHESTER.
