Description
LC. MOORE.
Improvement in Transportation OiLCans.
N0. 133,242, Paiented Nov. 19,1372."
UNITED STATES A'IENT Orr- 0E.
JAMES C. MOORE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRANSPCRTATIQN OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,212,dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MOORE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Transportation Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is the ready withdrawal of oils, 850., from transportation-cans by a device which will not interfere with the close packing of a number of cans together for transportation. This object I attain by securing to the metal vessel B, Fig. 1, as near to the bottom of the same as possible, a cock, W, having an outlet-handle, b, so adapted to an opening in the wooden protective casing A, which forms part of the transportation-can, that when the cock is closed its outlet-handle will be contained entirely within this opening, and therefore will not interfere with the arrangement of a number of the cases in contact with each other for transportation.
Cans containing burning-fluids, oils, varnishes, &c., are usually made of tinned plates, and are inclosed within and proteced by wooden boxes. There is but one opening in an ordinary transportation-can, and this at the top; hence it becomes necessary, when the contents, or a portion of the contents, have to be withdrawn, to tilt the can, an operation not only tedious, but, under many circumstances, dangerous.
By my invention, which will be readily understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawing, the contents of the vessel can, without tilting the same, be
at any time withdrawn through the outlethandle b on turning the latter outward, as shown in Fig. 1. When the cock has to be closed the outlet-handle must be simply moved back into the opening (1 of the protective cover A, where it does not interfere with the close packing of the several transportation-cans together.
If desired this opening 61 may be closed with a thin plate, at, so connected to the wooden cover by a pin that it can be moved out of the way when the cock has to be opened.
I claim as my invention- A transportation-can, having a cock with an outlet-handle adapted to an opening, 01, in
the protective covering A, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. MOORE.
