Be it known that 1, hi Barium a citizen of the U2 .eed States, residing at Battle Creek, count of Calhoun, State of hiichigan, have ii Tented certain new and useful Improvements in Carton-Sealing Machines, of which the following is a speoification.
This invention relates to improvements in Carton sealing machines.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide in a carton sealin chine an improved means for supporting the flaps to insure the even application of glue thereto.
Second to provide in carton sealing inrehine an iinprored means for suppoitn carton flaps as they are acted upon by [-1 glue rollers so the the cartons are not likely to be distorted during the o eration.
Third, to provide in a carton sea chine an improved means for apply g e glue to the flaps which is eeonomieal in lie use of glue.

At the rear of this flap spreader are glue wheels 9 which reeive their glue driren from th shaft 11 having a driving gears 13 and 14 to the glue rollers. flap spreader has a rearward platelilze exten ion 15 and while still retained in their spread position the flaps are engaged by the flap supporting and pressing plates 16 carried by the hains 17. These chains are supported by the sprockets 18 and 19, the sproke s 19 being the driving sprockets and carried by shafts 20. These shafts are supported by bakets 21 projecting inwardly from the frame so that the cartons may pass between as shown in Fig. I. As the flaps 8 supported by the plates 16 pass from the retaining members 15 they travel under the glue rollers 9.
To support the upper reaches of the chain 17 and yieldingly press the flaps against the glue rollers I provide the bars22 Whichare ape are folded forwardly by the osfillating i the troughs 10. The glue wheels are Cir disposed between the sprockets to support the upper reaches of the chains, as shown in Fig. II. These bars are yieldingly supported by springs 23 and the pins 2th carried by arms 25 projecting from the sup porting brackets for the sprocket wheel shaft.
The shafts 20 are connected to the jack shaft 26. by means of sprockets 27 thereon and sprockets 28 on the shafts 20 and the sprocket chains 29. The ja ck shaft 26 has a driving clutch member 30 rotatably mounted thereon and driven from the chain 31 and a roacting driven clutch member 32 keyed to the shaft.
The driven clutch member carries a spring actuated engaging member 33 which projeets therefrom in position to be engaged by the releasing member 34: carried by the pivot shaft 35 which is shown in Fig. I in its retracted position. The clutch engaging member is actuated by spring 36 so that normally the clutch is engaged. When, however, the releasing member 34: is in its normal or clutch releasing position the clutch engaging member 33 comes into contact therewith as the clutch rotates thereby releasing the clutch. The releasing member is actuated from the rock shaft 37 having a trip arm 38 thereon adapted to be engaged by the cartons as the are carried along by the feed conveyer which actuates the releasing memher so that the clutch engaging member passes on each revolution of the clutch providing a continuous drive for the jack shaft until a holder having no carton thereon passes the arm when the clutch is released until the rock shaft is again actuated to actuate the releasing member.
The holders have notch-like recesses 39 to permit their passing the arm 38 without actuating the same when no carton is present. The rock shaft 37 is provided with an arm 40 connected to the release member 34 by the link 41. A spring 42 connected with the arm 40 and to the frame returns the release member to its releasing position.
lVith the parts thus arranged the flaps to be glued are firmly pressed against the glue rollers at the same time their supports traveling with the conveyer prevent their being distorted or twisted on account of such pres sure. By thus supporting and pressing them against the glue rollers a thinner glue and a less quantity of glue is sufficient to properly secure the desired adhesiveness than is necessary otherwise, so that my improvements result in a saving of glue and, further, the thin small quantity of glue sets quickly. By driving the flap supporting means only when cartons are present, the supporting plates pass the glue rollers only when protectedby the flaps so that they do not be c ome'touled withthe glue which would seriously interfere with the practical operation of the machine.
I have not shown means for closing and sealing the flaps after the glue is applied thereto as such means form no part of this invention. T have not attempted to illustrate or describe various adaptations and modifications which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
l l aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. in a carton sealing machine, the corn bination with a feed conveyor provided with carton holders, glue rollers disposed above said feed conveyor, flap spreaders disposed in front of said glue rollers, flap supporting means comprising sprocket chains and driving and supporting sprockets tl erefor, disposed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in a horizontal position below the glue rollers, flap supporting plates mounted on said chains to engage the under sides of the flaps while below said spreaders and travel therewith the rartons are carricd along by the feed conveyer to the glue rollers, yielding supporting bars for the upper reaches of said chains disposed between their sprockets so that the tlaps are pressed against the glue rollers as they travel past them, a jack shaft disposed below said feed conveyor, driving connections for said jack shaft to the driving sprockets of said flap supporting means, a driving clutch member rotatably mounted on said jack shaft, a coacting driven clutch member keyed to said shaft, a spring actuated en gaging member for said clutch members carried by said driven clutch members, a releasing member normally in position to release said engaging member, and a rock shaft cor: nected to said releasing member and prorided with a trip arm disposed to be engaged by cartons carried by said carton holders and operatively connected to said clutch releasing member so that when said carton holders have cartons thereon said clutch is actuated to drive said flap supporting means, the carton holders being recessed to receive said tr'p so tha it is actuated only when the holders are carrying cartons.
2. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyor provided with carton holders, glue rollers disposed above said feed conveyer, flap spreaders disposed in front of said glue rollers, flap supporting means comprising sprocket chains and driving and supporting sprockets therefor, dis" posed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in a horizontal position below the glue rollers, flap supporting plates mounted on said chains to engage the under sides of the flaps while below said spreaders and travel therewith as the cartons carried along by the feed conveyor to the glue rollers, ajack shaft disposed below said feed conveyor, driving connections for said jack shaft to the driving sprockets of said flap supporting means, a driving clutch member rotatably mounted on said jack shaft, a coacting driven clutch member keyed to said shaft, a spring actuated enmember for said clutch members carried by said driven clutch members, a releasing member normally in position to release said engaging member, and a rock shaft connected to said releasing member and provided with a trip arm disposed to be engaged by cartons carried by said carton holders and operatively connected to said clutch releasing member so that when said carton holders have cartons thereon said clutch is actuated to drive said flap supporting means, the carton holders being recessed to receive said trip arm so that it is actuated only when the holders are can rying cartons.
3. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyer provided with carton holders, glue rollers disposed above said feed conveyer, flap spreaders disposed in front of said glue rollers, flap support-- inc; means comprising sprocket chains and driving and supporting sprockets therefor, disposed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in a horizontal position below the glue rollers. flap supporting plates mounted on said chains to enn'a the under sides of the flaps while below said spreaders and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along bv the feed conveyer to the glue rollers, yielding supportinn; bars for the upper reaches of said chains disposed between their sprockets so t at th flaps are pressed against the glue rollers as they travel past them, a jack shaft disposed b low said feed convever, dri ng connections for said iack shaft to the driving sprockets of said flap supporting means comprising a clutch, clutch releasing member, and a rock shaft connected to sa d releasing member and provided with a trip arm crisposed to be engaged by cartons carried by said carton holders and operativelv conne ted to said clutch rele sing member so that when said carton holders have cartons thereon said clutch is actuated to drive said flap supporting means.
4. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed convever provided with carton holders, glue rollers disposed above said feed convever. flap sOreaders disposed in front of said glue rollers, flap supportinc; means comprising sprocket chains and drivinn and supporting sprockets therefor, disposed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in a horizontal position below the glue rollers, flap supporting plates mounted on said chains to engage the under sides of the flaps while below said spreaders and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyer to the glue rollers, a jack shaft disposed below said feed conveyer, driving connections for said jack shaft to the driving sprockets of said flap supporting means comprising a clutch, a clutch releasing member, and a rock shaft connected to said releasing member and provided with a trip arm disposed to be engaged by cartons carried by said carton holders and operatively connected to said clutch releasing member so that when said carton holders have cartons thereon said clutch is actuated to drive said flap supporting means.
5. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyer providedwith carton holders, glue rollers disposed. above said feed conveyer, flap spreaders disposed in front of said glue rollers, flap supporting and pressing means comprising sprocket chains and driving and supporting sprockets therefor. disposed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in horizontal position below the glue fiap supporting plates mounted on said chains to engage the under sides of the flaps and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyor, yielding supporting bars for the upper reaches of said chains dis osed between their sprockets so that the flaps are yielding-1v pressed against the glue rollers as they travel past them, a jack shaft disposed below said feed conveyor, a driving means for said flap supporting and pressing means. and a control clutch and control means therefor comprising a member actuated bv the cartons on the holders.
6. In carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed coi'ivever provided with carton holders, glue rollers dis osed above said feed convever, flap Spreaders disposed in front of said glue rollers, fla supporting and pressing means comprising sprocket chains and drivinrr and supporting sprockets therefor, disposed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in a horizontal position below the .Qllle. rollers, flap supporting plates mounted on said chains to engage the under sides of the flaps and travel therewith as the cartons are arried along bv the feed convever, a jack shaft disposed below said feed conveyer, a driving means for said flap supporting and pressing means. and a control clutch and control means therefor comprising a member actuated by the cartons on the holders.
7. In a carton sealing machine. the combination with a feed conveyer provided with carton holders, glue rollers disposed above said feed conveyer, flap spreader-s disposed in front of said glue rollers, flap supporting and .pressing means comprising sprocket chains and driving and supporting sprockets therefor, disposed so that the upper reaches of the chains are supported in a horizontal position below the glue rollers, flap supporing plates mounted on said chains to engage the under sides of the flaps and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyer, yielding supporting bars for the upper reaches of said chains disposed between their sprockets so that the flaps are yieldingly pressed against the glue rollers as they travel past them, and a jack shaft disposed below said feed conveyer.
8. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyer provided with carton holders, a glue roller, flap supporting and pressing means comprising a sprocket chain and driving and supporting sprockets therefor, flap supporting plates mounted on said chain to engage the flaps and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyer, a yielding supporting bar for the upper reach of said chain disposed between its sprocket so that the flaps are yieldingly pressed against the glue roller as they travel past it, a driving means for said flap supporting and pressing means comprising a clutch, a releasing member normally in position to release said engaging member, and a rock shaft connected to said releasing member and provided with a trip arm disposed to be engaged by cartons carr1ed by said carton holders and operatively connected to said clutch releasing member so that when said carton holders have cartons mally in position to release said engaging member, and a rock shaft connected to said releaslng member and provided with a trip arm disposed to be engaged by cartons carried by said carton holders and operatively connected to said clutch releasing member so that when said carton holders have cartons thereon said clutch is actuated to drive said flap supporting means.
10. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyer provided with carton holders, a glue roller, flap supporting and pressing means comprising a sprocket chain and driving and supporting sprockets therefor, flap supporting plates mounted on said chain to engage the flaps and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyer, a yielding supporting bar for the upper reach of said chain disposed between its sprocket so that the flaps are yieldingly pressed against the glue roller as they travel past it, and a driving means for said flap supporting and pressing means.

In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyer, a glue roller, a traveling flap supporting and pressing means comprising flap supporting plates adapted to engage the flaps and travel there with as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyer, said supporting plates being held yieldingly toward the glue roller so that the flaps are supported and pressed against the glue roller as they travel past it, a driving means for said flap support and pressing means including a clutch, and a control means for said clutch actuated by the cartons on the conveyer so that said flap supporting and pressing means is driven only when the feed conveyer is ca "rying cartons and the flap supporting plates prevented from contacting with the glue roller by the carton flaps.
12. In a carton sealing machine, the combination with a feed conveyer, a glue roller, and a traveling liap supporting and pressing means comprising flap supporting plates adapted to engage the flaps and travel therewith as the cartons are carried along by the feed conveyer, said supporting plates being held yieldingly toward the glue roller so that the flaps are supported and pressed against the glue roller as they travel past it.
