To all whom t may concern.'
' Be it known that we, LEROY W. DAVIS and CHARLES` C. STEWART, citizens of the United States, residing at Dodge City, in the county of Ford and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVrenches, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to tools, particularly to wrenches, and has for its object the provision of a wrench which is so constructed that upon release of an especially formed locking means the movable jaw may be moved any desired distance for cooperation with the iixed aw whereby the device may be almost instantly adjusted for gripping any sized bolt or nut which it is capable of gripping.
An important object is the provision of a wrench which is provided with a novelly constructed lock whereby by a simple quarter turn thereof the movable jaw of the wrench may be released for adjustment or locked in adjusted position, a feature being the fact that the construction of the lock is such that vthe user of the wrench may efi'ectually manipulate and adjust it even though his hands be encumbered by gloves or mittents.
Another object is the provision of a wrench of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture7 highly elicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with our invention,

Reerring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body of the device which practically serves as a therein a head 13 having formed thereon a iixed jaw 1li. Vhen occasion may require, the head 13 may be used for hammering, the operator holding' the body 10 as a handle. Secured within the other end of the body 1() is a block 15 provided with a central cylindrical hole 16 and having its end projecting beyond the end o1 the body 10. Iii' preferred, an auxiliary handle 17 may be telescopically engaged Vupon the body 10 so that this auxiliary handle may be pulled out to form an extension of the body for providing greater leverage when necessary.
Disposed within the body 10 is a movable member 18 formed as a block provided at one side with a jaw 19 adapted for coperation with the fixed jaw 1.4 and this member 18 is provided at its sides with grooves 20 engaged by the flanges 12 for assisting in guiding the member 18 in its movement. The member 18 is provided with a long'r tudinally extending bore 22 elliptical in cross section with its wall threaded at the ends of the minor axis and smooth at the ends of the major axis.
Disposed within the body 10 is an operating rod 23 threaded throughout the greater portion of its length and flattened, as shown at 24, at opposite sides throughout the threaded portion. At one end, this rod 23 is engaged within a recess 25 in the head 13 and its other end passes through the hole 16 in the block 15. Adjacent the block 15 the rod 23 is provided with an enlargement 28 which may be a stop collar or the like adapted to engage against the inner face of the block 15 for-preventing withdrawal of the rod 23 from the body 10. At its outer end beyond the block 15, the rod 23 carries a cap 29 which is suspended or otherwise secured thereon for limited sliding movement and this cap includes flanges 30 engageable against opposite sides of the portion of the block 15 which extends beyond the end of the body 10. A coil spring 31 surrounds the projecting end of the rod 23 beyond the cap 29 and is retained in position by a transverse pin 32 or the like..
The operation of the device is Yas fol-- lows l In order to permit movement of the movable jaw 19, it is necessary that the operator grasp the cap 29 and pull upon it to disengage its flanges 8O from the projecting portion of the block 15, the sprin 31 being compressed by this movement. he operattor then rotates the cap 29 a quarter turn whereupon after he releases it the cap 29 or flanges 30 thereon will engage against the other sides of the block 15. When the ca 29 is thus rotated, the rod 23 will be partlally rotated so that the flattened sides 2-1 thereof will be arranged adjacent the threaded portions of the base 22 and will not engage the threads and the threaded portions of the rod 23 will be disposed adjacent the smooth portions of the bore 22 at the ends of the major aXis thereof. The movable member 18 carrying the jaw 19 may then be moved the entire length of the body 10 if desired in order that the jaws may be brought into operative engagement with the nut, bolt or the like. After adjustment is made, the operator then grasps the cap 29 and rotates it a quarter turn whereby to rotate the rod .J8 and bring the threaded portion thereof into en agement with the threads in the bore 22. 'Ihe movable jaw will thus be locked and held firmly until released.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is of course to b'e understood that we r serve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus' described our invention, we claim A wrench comprising a supporting body provided at one end with a Xed jaw, a movable jaw slidable with respect to said body and provided with an elliptical bore threaded at the ends of its minor axis, an operating rod extending longitudinally of said body and extending through said bore, said rod being threaded for engagement with the threaded portion of said bore and having its opposite sides flattened to permit its disengagement from the threaded p0rtion of said bore, a block closing the other end of said body and revolubly receiving said operating rod, said block having flattened sides, a hollow button member slidable and non-rotatable upon the end of said rod projecting beyond said block, a head on 'the projecting end of said rod, a spring surrounding the projecting end of said rod and abutting against said head and the inner wall of said button, and arms on opposite sides of said button engageable selectively with opposite ones of the fiattened sides of said block whereby to hold said operating rod in partially rotating adjusted positions.
