Specification of Letters Patent.

1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Moan, V. ANDREWS and STEPHEN Vv". HOLMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Minnea olis, in the county of Hennepin and State 0 Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Rotary Motor- Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary vacuum pumpsand pertains especially to compound rotary pumps.
This invention comprises important improvements in and variations of the ump atent allowed October 20th, 1919 erial o. 326,187, on our application filed in the United States Patent Oflice September 25th, 1919, entitled Rota water pump, and while the principles of t ese pumps are similar, their construction, operation and results are essentially different, especially in that we now provide a water power lpump motor by reason of simultaneous trip e pumping operations.
The object of the invention is to provide a plurality'of cut out rollers on each side of and in the path of movement of a plurality of rotary blades within a chamber the casing of which has a plurality of intakes and a pluralit of discharge openings arranged in pairs re ative to the cut out rollers, whereby an inlet and an outlet is formed adjacent to each of said rollers, and aifording triple pumping.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rotary mounting for a lurality of blades or vanes so arranged within the pump casing chamber as to ave a pair of lades occupy the chamber spaces between the cut out rollers, in certain conditions of a pumping operation, whereby induction is afforded between the rollers and the blade adjacent to one side of the rollers, and
' eduction is afforded between the same rollers and the blade adjacent the other or opposite side of the ro lers, whereby triple pumping operations are produced.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of vanes or blades mounted on a gear but which meshes with a inion on the inner end of the cut out rollers for automatic revolution of tlie vanes and the rollers in pumpin operations.
Various other objects, a vantages and improved results are" attainable in the manufacture and ap lication of the invention, as will be hereina fter fully set forth.

The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawin In carrying out these improvements for a compound pump. we form or attach to the outside of a cylindrical casing 1, a pluralit of sub-casings 2. Preferably three of suc sub-casings are arranged opposite each other on each side of the casing 1 at an angle thereto. The sub-casings open into a ump chamber 3 formed by the casing 1, whic has an intake or induction coupling t on one side of the longitudinal central plane of each pair of sub-casings, and an exhaust or eduction coupling 5 on the other side of such plane, so that for every pair of sub-casings there is a pair of' ports central of the periphery of the casing 1. The sub-casings are made conical for revolubly containing a conical cut-off roller 6, and a portion of the head of the sub-casings extends over the periphery of the casing 1 to the flanges 7 of the casing, and said flanges are bolted together as at 8. The bottom of the sub-casmgs terminates adjacent to a hub 9 of the casing 1, for a driven shaft 10. The casing 1 being fixed in stationary position as by suitable supports 11 bolted to a foundation 12, so that the shaft 10 may revolve in the casing hub 9.
The rollers 6 have a plurality of lengthwise .grooves or cut-outs 13, the cut-outs of each roller being equal in number, as three so that the cut-outs of adjacent rollers may' be brought opposite each other in a pumping operation. The rollers 6 have spindles 14, journaled in the sub-casings, and the inner or small and of the rollers is provided with a pinion 15.

These blades 11 crease in width from the hub 16 to their outer end and appear as wedge or fan shape so as to fit the chamber 3 of like shape. The hub 16 is fixed or otherwise secured to the shaft 10 within the casing hub 9, and the roller pinions mesh with the teeth of the hub 16, for revolvin the rollers in unison with the vanes or b ades so that the blades Wlll successively engage op osite cut outs of each air of rollers as t e latter are revolved uring the revolution of the blades in a triple pumping operation.
It will be understood that the hub and pinion.gearing is of such relative s ze or pitch as to automatically turn the rollers so as to place one cut out of each an of adjacent rollers opposite and there y form a passage for the vanes between the rollers.
It will be seen that the chamber 3 is divided into three sub-chambers bythree pairs of rollers, and that each sub-chamber has an induction ort 20 and an eduction port 21 controlled By the rollers arranged in cooperating pairs, thus afiording a multiplicity of inductions and eductions to which may be coupled suitable fluid coveyer pipes leading in various directions to and from the pump, for furnishing motive power as desired.
Obviously the rollers and the vanes have such relative arrangement as to simultaneously open and close all the ports, dnrmg the revolution of the vanes for creating a suction in the sub-chambers which are separated by the airs of rollers and these rollers separate ad acent eduction and induction ports, so that the vanes carry fluid from the induction port at one side of each pair of rollers and force the fluid throu h the eduction port at the other side of cat: pair of rollers, whereby continuous compoun or triple pumping is produced during the revolution of t e gear hub car ing the vanes.
We do not wish to be un erstood as confining ourselves to any particular size or capacity of the ump, to the number of cut oif rollers an vanes, relative coo oration, nor to any particular riving the pump, nor to any particular material comprising the various except as to their parts, neither do we wish to confine ourselves 1n the use or application of the ump, but reserve the right to make such 0 anges and variations in t e manufacture and practical application of the invention as may not be inconsistent with the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a compound rotary pump, a cylindrical casing, a hub gear revolubly mounted in the casing, a plurality of vanes radiatin from the hub and fitting a chamber formed by said casing, a plurality of out off rollers on each side of the casing and arranged in cooperating pairs for induction and eduction of fluid adjacent to each pair of rollers which have cut outs for the passa e of the vanes therebetween, a pinion on t e inner end of each roller and meshing with the hub gear, and means for revolving the hub.
2. n a compound rotary pump, a cylindrical casing, a revoluble vane hu'b having double gear faces, a plurality of yanes radiating from the hub between said faces, a plurality of cut off rollers arranged in cooperating pairs within the casing for the passage of the vanes between the rollers of each pair, a pinion on each of said rollers and meshing with the gear faces of said hub, and means for revolving the hubwhereby an injection and an ejection is roduced adjacent to each pair of said rollers. 3. In a compound rotary pump, a cylindrical casing forming a chamber, a vane hub revoluble in the chamber and having a gear on each side thereof, a plurality of vanes radiating from the eriihery o the hub, a plurality of out o rollers at each side of the chamber and arranged in cooperating pairs for the passage of the vanes between the rollers of each pair, said rollers dividing the chamber into a plurality of sub-chambers, a pinion on each roller and meshing with the hub gear, and means for revolving the hub for unison movement of the vanes and the rollers.
