Description

J. W. WILLIAMS.
GRAIN CUP CLIP.
APPLlCATION FILED MAR.20. 1919.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
WITNESS:
A TTORNEYI JOSEPH WALTON WILLIAMS, OF BLABON. NORTH DAKOTA.
GRAIN-CUP our,
Application filed March 20, 1919.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. WiLLIAMs, citizen of the United States, residing at Blabon, in the county of Steele and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Cup Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichv it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to cups or buckets, such as used on elevator and conveyor chains, belts, and the like, and the invention aims to provide novel means for securing the cups or buckets to the chain, belt, or the like, in order that there will be no liability of the cups or buckets becoming loose, as is the case with the fastening means as now used wherein the cups or buckets are simply fastened by bolts to the chain or belt. Considerable annoyance and inconvenience is caused by the loosening of the bolts and nuts which are ordinarily used for securing the cups or buckets of an elevator or conveyor to the endless chains or belts,
and the object of this invention is to provide novel and efficient, yet simple and inexpensive means for preventing the loosening of the nuts, whereby the cups or buckets will be firmly held in place.
A. further object is the provision of a clip of novel form to be used on the cup or bucket to prevent the loosening thereof, and
designed to engage over the edge of the bucket and engage the bolt and nut for holding same against loosening.
"With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a grain cup or bucket showing the clips applied.

the clips as applied.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Serial No. 283,829.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the clips.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through one of In the drawing there is illustrated a grain cup or bucket 1 of an elevator or conveyer,
which has its edge or rim bent back outas at L, and theback of the cup is wardly, I
bolts 4 to the links 3 of the elevasecured by tor or conveyer chains, although it is be used also when the cup is fastened to a belt. The bolts l are inserted forwardly through the links 0 and back of the cup-1, as usual, and have nuts 5 on their forward ends within the cup, but it has been found in practice that this arrangement is the source of considerable annoyance and trouble, due to the loosening of the nuts 5. When this occurs, the cups are often damaged, as well as the machine or belt. The loosening of the cups or buckets also decreases the efiiciency of the elevator. 1
The clips which are used for use for holding the nuts 5 against turning, are inexpensively made from strips of metal. Each clip comprises a strip of metal doubled upon itself into substantialinverted U-shape so as to straddle the upper edge of the clip 1 and ear or portion of the link 3 which the bolt 4: engages. The arms 7 of the clip 6 depend at the forward and rear surfaces of the back of the cup, and are provided with apertures 8 through which the bolts 4 are inserted, said clips being applied before the bolts are, and the lower ends of the forward arms of the clips have lips 9 bent forwardly at an angle on which the nuts 5 rests, to prevent them from turning. By the provision of the clips, the bolts 4: and nuts 5 will be prevented from loosening, thereby holding the cup or bucket firmly in place against the chain or belt, or other eonveyer member.
Having thus descrlbed the invention, what tending forwardly through said portions to bev understood that the present invention can and back of the cup with their heads at the rear, nuts on said bolts at the inside of the cup, and doubled clips fitting over the upper edges of said portions and back of the cup 5 to hold said edges together, said clips overlapping the opposite sides of said portions and back of the cup, the arms of said clips having apertures through which the bolts extend to'hold the clips on the upper edges 10 of said portions and back of the cup, the
inner arms of the clips having their end portions bent forwardly under the nuts to prevent themfrom turning.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15' two subscribing witnesses.
