EVERETT WINFRED MINER, 0F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
' CUTTER-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application filed July 29, 1919. Serial No. 314,011.
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT W. Minna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartspring member connecting the shank and the block.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive holder for cutters or the like, which is compact in form, which can be used with tool holders or posts of the usual kind, and which serves to hold the cutter resiliently but firmly with respect to the work.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cutter holder in which the cutter is yieldingly held to prevent undue wear and injury, but in which side eliminated. p
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cutter holder having means for resiliently holding the cutter, but which is capable of a plurality of lateral adjustments,
so that the cutter may be held in differenting member is preferably of circular crossoff-set positions.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims. a
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified form of the cutter holder;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 3, on the line 41 of Fig. 2.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be understood that the cutter holder can be utilized for the usual purposes to which a spring isv device of this kind is put, for example, in connection with machine tools such as lathes or the like. It may be fashioned from steel or other suitable materials, and in various sizes. Certain of the details of construction form no part of the invention and may be varied in accordance with special conditions or individual preference.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, Figs. 1 and 3, the cutter holder has a shank 10, of flattened, elongated form, and
adapted to be secured to the customary tool holder or post. At one end, it is laterally extended to form a head 11 having at its free end a recess 12 extending from the hottom to the top of the head. The latter, at
its under side 13, may be cut away, to give clearance when the cutter holder is in use. The inner end of the recess 13 is preferably rounded.
Movably but snugly fitted into the recess is a block 14: of rectangular form, and capable of movement vertically within the recess. The sides 15 of the head, which form the recess, are of sufficient thickness and stifiness to prevent any lateral movement or spring of the block 14. The latter has a preferably rectangular socket 16 formed therein, designed to receive the usual cutter.- The latter is secured in place in' any convenient manner, for example, by means of the customary set screw 17.
I provide a spring connecting member 18 for the head and the block. The connectsection, and is fashioned from spring steel or the like. It is of U-form and has one arm located in a vertical or circular bore 19 formed in the'headll. The other end orarm of the connecting member is rigidly secured in a bore. 20 provided for the purpose, in the block 14. Suitable means are provided for fastening the connecting mem her with respect to the head of the shank. For example, the head has a transverse bore 21 intersecting the bore 19. A retaining pin 22 is located in the bore 21 and engages a suitable notch 23 of the arm of the connecting member, as is shown in Fig. 3, to prevent the inadvertent removal of the connecting member from the head. It will be seen that the connecting member serves resiliently to hold the block within the recess, permitting, however, slight vertical movements or adjustments of the block in the recess, when the tool holder is in operation, notwithstanding that the block and the tool carried thereby are firmly held against side spring.
The form of the device shown in Fig. 2 is substantially similar to the previously described one. It comprises a shank 24: having a head 25 bifurcated to form two horizontally disposed, separated extensions 26 and 27. The free edge 28 of the upper extension is of arcuate form. The-inner face 29 of the bifurcation is likewise of arcuate form. I provide a carrier 30 having a reduced part 31 formed to it between the extensions 26 and 27, and having its end face 32 and a shoulder 33 of arcuate form to correspond to the form of the surfaces of the head with which they contact.
Atfthe other end the carrier has a bifurcation 34 with its end rounded. A block 35 is snugly fitted into the bifurcation and has "a cutter socket 36 and a set screw 37 for fits into suitable registering openings 42 of the head 25 and 43 of the reduced part 31 of the carrier. A nut 44; is screwed upon the threaded end 41 and serves to secure the connecting member in place. If so desired, a
washer 45 may be provided and is positioned between the nut and the under side of the head. When the nut is screwed up, it securely clamps the parts together.
The arcuate contacting surfaces of the head and the carrier are concentric with the openings 42 and 43, so that the carrier can be adjusted laterally in either direction about the arm- 40-of the U-shaped connecting member 38, which, in effect, serves as a pivot for the carrier. I V
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent a Y 1. A device of the class described comprising a shank, a block associated with the shank and capable of movement in one direction, said block having means for holding a cutter, and a spring member connecting said shank and said block.
2 A device of the class described comprising a shank terminating in a recess, a block movably mounted in said recess and having tically with respect to said shank, means for securing a cutter in said socket, and a U- shaped spring member having one'arm secured to said shank and one arm secured to said block.
A. A device of the class described coma vertical recess, a block snugly'fitted in said recess but capable of vertical movement, said block having a cutter socket, and means for securing a cutter in said socket, said head and said block having vertical bores, and a U-shaped spring member having its arms secured in said bores of said shank and said block 5. A device of the class described comprising a shank terminating in a head having bifurcations forming a horizontal recess, a carrier having a part mounted in said recess, said carrier having a vertical recess, a block movably fitted into said vertical recess of said carrier, said block having means for holding a cutter, said head and said part of said carrier having registering openings, said block having a bore, and a U- shaped spring member having one arm mounted in said registering openings and the other arm mounted in said bore.
6.
