Description
UNIT-En STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP JOFFE, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSIC-SHEET.
Application filed August 24, 1918.
means adapted to facilitate the turning thereof.
As practically all musical instruments are played with both hands, it is diflicult to turn the sheets of music from. which the performer is playing, with sufficient certainty and rapidity to avoid interruption of the performance. In many cases an attendant is required to turn the sheets of music for the performer. Large numbers of sheet turning machines have been devised and patented. Many unfortunate accidents have occurred at important concerts due to the turning over of more than one sheet at a time or failure to turn the sheet at the requisite time to avoid interruption'of the performance. Musicians have recognized this difficulty for years, but no safe and satisfactory means ever has been found to overcome the difficulty.
It is the purpose of my invention to obviate this difficulty by a simple, inexpensive construction which enables the sheets to be turned by either hand with rapidity and certainty and which obviates the danger of turning more than one sheet at a time. My invention is capable of many embodiments and many similar uses and I have chosen the particular embodiment disclosed merely for purposes of illustration and without any intent to limit its scope or applicability.
The single figure of the drawing shows an embodiment of my invention applied to sheet music. v
It is the purpose of my invention to provide each sheet with a part which protrudes or extends beyond a following sheet to a sutficient extent to enable the sheet to be taken hold of singly and turned. In the embodimeet at my inven n ch sen r p r- Specification of Letters Patent.

poses of illustration, it will be noted that an edge of each sheet extends beyond the edge of the sheet which follows it. This extension may be provided throughout the entire edge as illustrated, or may be confined to any desired portion or portions of one or more of the edges according to the specific problem presented. In the illustrated embodiment consisting of a piece of sheet music having six sheets, it is convenient to cut or arrange each succeeding sheet so that a preceding sheet extends a sufficient distance be yond the edge of the succeeding sheet to enable the preceding sheet to be taken hold of readily and with certainty. It is obvious that the invention may be carried out in this way or by the addition of parts capable of producing the desired result.
Many modifications of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing therefrom or from the scope of the claims, my inventionconsisting of means provided on each sheet so that a part of each sheet will extend beyond thenext succeeding sheet to facilitate and render certain the turning of each sheet.
Having described my invention what I' claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A music book comprlsing a series of 7 sheets of gradually decreasing width, each of said sheets being narrower than the one preceding it, whereby each sheet can be turned over without disturbing the rest, the difference of width between each sheet and the one following it being sufficiently great to permit each sheet to be taken hold of on both sides at its free edge independently of the following sheet.
2. A series of sheets of music assembled for consecutive use, each sheet havinga part extending beyond a corresponding and less extending part on a plurality of adjacent subsequent sheets a distance sufficient to enable each said part to be taken hold of singly without danger of grasping an adjacent subsequent shcet, whereby the necessary turn ing of single sheets during the use of said series is facilitated and rendered easy and certain.
3. A series of sheets of music assembled for consecutive use each sheet havin an integral and substantial part extending beyond each adjacent subsequent sheet a dis tance sufficient to enable each said part to be 5 taken hold of singly Without danger of grasping an adjacent subsequent sheet,
whereby the necessary turning of single sheets during the use of said series is facilitated and rendered eas and certain.
In testimony Whereo I hereunto affix my 10' signature.
' PHILIP J OFFE.
