IMPROVEMENT IN MlDDLlNGS-SEPARATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,193, dated November 19, 1872.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES G. BIRELY, of Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Middlin gs Separator and Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification,
and to letters and figures of reference marked frame of my improved middlin gs separator and cleaner; B, the rectangular screen-frame or box, supported in the frame A by the hinged arms 0. D D D D are the screens, which are inclined and arranged in steps, one-half of one screen overlapping the adjacent half of the screen in front of it. These screens are removable, their ends being placed between parallel guide bars or cleats a, secured to the sides of the frame B. The screens are divided into sections of different degrees of texture. The screens D D D are each divided into two sections, and the screen D into three. E E It designate brushes, supported respectively above the first and second sections of the screen D and the lower section of screen D by means of elastic arms 0, which are attached to the front and back part of the frame A, as shown. These arms are made with holes, through which pass the threaded parts e upon which are placed nuts e by the turning of which the tension of the elastic arms and the consequent pressure of the brushes upon thescreens are regulated. F indicates a trough, from which the middlings pass to the screens through the openings f, located at different points to cause a general distribution of the middlings over the surface of the upper screen. Sliding doors G are employed for vthe purpose of regulating the size of said openings. H designates a horizontal shaft, journaled to the frame A at one side of the frame containing the screens. This. shaft is provided with two eccentrics, h, which act upon bent arms It projecting from one side of the frame B, and cause the screens to have the proper vibratory motion.
The middlings are treated by this machine inthe following manner: First, the middlings are admitted to the first section of the screen D, which is of very fine wire-cloth. The fine clammy flour is separated from the middlings as they pass over said section of screen, and drops into a receiver below. The middlings, being carried onto the second section of the screen D and sifted, the finer grade of middlings is obtained. The middlings still unsifted pass to the third section of the screen, and are sifted through it to the first section of the screen D That which now falls through the first section of screen D is of the same quality as the fine grade of middlings first sifted, the texture of the two sections producing such material being the same. What remains passes onto the second section of screen D and falls or is sifted through to the first section of screen D Thefiner portion is then sifted through the latter, and is of the same grade as the fine middlings first produced. The contents of the screen D are now carried to the second section of said screen; The finer portion is sifted through it, and also through the first section of screen D again producing the first grade of middlings. That which sifts through theseeond section of screen D is middlings of the second grade, and that which remains after the sifting process passes over the tail of the machine as refuse or ship stufi. The middlings are now in a fine condition to be reground, after which they are again passed through the machine and more flour obtained.
The screens above which are arranged the brushes-are to be made of fine wire-cloth the others of bo1ting-cl0th.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The elastic arms 0, screw-posts 6 and In testimony that 1 ciaim the above I have 7 nuts 0 in combination with the brushes E E hereunto subscribed myname in the presence E applied to middlings-separators, substanof two witnesses. tially as and for the purpose specified. 4 JAMES G. BIRELY.
2. The combination of the inclined screens s p D D D D the screen-frame B, hinged arms Witnesses:
O, shaft H, eccentrics h, and bent arms h, con- GEORGE E. UPHAM, structed and arranged substantially as and for PHILIP 0. MASI. the purpose set forth.
