J. H. PRICE.
SPARK AND THROTTLE LEVER LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED SEPLZS. I919.

INVENTOR J Jgb/J Hfi-ce ,4 TTORNEYS JOSEPH PRICE, or CAPEGIR'ARDEAU, mssoonr,
SPABK-AND THROTTIJELEVER LOCK.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known thatl, Josnrn H. Place, a
citizen oftheUmtedStates, and a resident of Cape Girardeau, in the county of Cape Girardeau andiState of Missouri, have in-. vented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark and Throttle Lever Locks, of which the following is a specification. I
My present invention relates generally, to locks and more particularly. to an ignition and throttle lock for Ford machines, my oh ject being the provision of asimple inexpensive device which may be readily ap plied and removed and which will in its operative position effectively prevent manipulation. of either the throttle lever or .the spark lever from the fully closed and retarded positions respectively. j
A further object is. the provisionj'of a simple inexpensive device of this nature,
which will permit of the use ofiapad lock,
allowing the user the free choice as between key and keyless or combination locks.
A still further object is the provision of a simple inexpensive device, in which the active locking elementswill, in the effective position, be fullyprotected beneath the gear casing adjacent the upper ing post and around the steeringpost itself.
Withthe jabove general objects, the fur-r ther and more specific objects of my invention, as well astheresulting advantages, Wlll be more plainly understood from the following description, reference beinghad to-the accoi'npanymgdrawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the practical application of my invention, in locked position, 1 r
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1, I
Fig. 8 is a top planview of the securing means provided by my invention in unlocked position, and V v c Fig. 4 is a cross section showing a slightly diii'erent form.
Referring now to ticularly to Figs. 1 and 2, have shown the steering post at 10, of a Ford machine, adjacent to the upper end of which is an enlarged annular gear casing 11, this gear casing being spaced above the quadrant 12, over which the spark lever 13 and throttle lever 14 operate.
As illustrated and as well known, the
quadrant projects laterally from the steer- Speciflcation of Letters Patent. I

ing p ost aroundthe forward portion thereof i and has at its twofrearends upright lugs 15 a ainst which the spark-lever'and throttle lei yer abut inthefully retarded and'closed positions respectively, which may, .for the present purposes inactive positions.
My'invention' aims tosecure the levers 13 and 14 in their inactive positions by means of a securing member consistmg of a 88mlcircular block or body p0rtion16 arranged to seat on the quadrant 12 to whose shape it] conforms, and provided with a semi-circular recess intermediate its straight side, as indi-. cated at117, which partially embraces the, steering post immediately beneath-thegear' casing 11, the outer portions of its straightsidev engaging the spark and throttle levers to, hold the latter immovable against the lugs15.:, e v j I The uppersurface of the body of block 16 at least, be tcrmed'their of the securlng member hasrecesses 18 in spaced relation extending from itsstraight edgeand is providedwith vertical openings located adjacent to the inner ends of these recesses through which-the inner annular extensions 19 of a pair of locking arms 20 de pend. i u
The lower ends of the depending annular portions 19 of loicking arms 20 are fastened in any suitable manner, as by means of riveting, so as to hold these annular portions rotatable in the vertical openings of the block 16 and permit locking arms 20 to swing in the recesses l8'and thus approximately flush with'the upper surfaceot the block 1-6; 1
l The locking arms 20 are and providedwith enlargedeyes 21 at their freeends, their curvature being such as to adapt them to be shifted snugly around the steering post 10 to bring their eyes 21 closely adjacent to and. in registry with one another for the reception of the shackle ot' a lock generally indicated at 22 and which may, 1t is obvious, be of either a key concurved as shown trolled or keyless nature, leaving the user unlimited choice as-to types and makes. It will thus be noted that in theefi'ected positionof the key, the two locking arms 20 snugly embracing that portion of the steering post opposite to the intermediate recess 17 of the block and are thus locked immediately below and in rigid relation beneath the casing 11, so that when locked,
neither the outer or inner ends of the lock ing arms may be forced upwardly in an attempt to defeat thepurposes of a lock on account of the gear casing 11.
It is further obvious that on account" of the firmseat of theblock or body of securing vmember upon the quadrant 12' it has. a
firm support and purchase which effectively cooperate with the remaining features and of the spark and throttle" levers.
' It will-thus bese'en that my invention proposes a construction and arrangement which 'ends of said locking arms to hold the same will carryout the objects first above stated, and which will be simple and inexpensive, as well as durable'and effective;
I claim 1. The combination with a steering; post having an enlarged annular gear casing,
spark and throttle levers, a quadrant from" whichthe said levers work, located in spaced relation below the gear casing, and having upright portions against which the levers are ,shiftable when inactive, of a securing means including a block arranged to be seated on the quadrant and partly. embracing the steering post between the quadrantand the gear casing, said block having por-- tionsengag'eable with the spark and throttle levers to hold the latter immovable against the upright portions of the quadrant, a pair ofcurved locking arms pivotally connected at one end to the block in spaced relation and movable'to embracethe remaining p'or tion of thesteering post' beneaththe gear casing, and a lock engagcable with thefree immovable in inactive position.
