, AEROPL'AN Specificatio'n'of Letters Application filed August 7, 1917. Serial No. 184,967.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gusravn DELAGE, a citizen of the French Republic, and residing at 46 Boulevard du Point du Jour, Issyles-Moulineaux, Seine, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aeroplanes, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved aeroplane.
The improved aeroplane is of the triplane type with three very narrow planes comprising a single longitudinal, and attached to the three apices of a triangle formed by the uprights that connect the planes together.
The manner in which this invention is to be performed Wlll now be more partlcularly described in the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example a constructional form of the improved aeroplane.
In these drawings V Figure l is a longitudinal side elevation of the aeroplane; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective-view of the general arrangement of the aeroplane.
In the improved aeroplane the three planes 1, 2, 3 are attached to the three apices of triangular frames constituted by uprights l, 5, G which serve at thesame time to connect the said planes together.
These planes are very narrow; they have each only one longitudinal at the point where they are attached to the uprights.
They are staggered in such a manner that the top plane 3 is set forwardly of the bottom plane 1, and that the latter is set forwardly of the middle plane 2, so that the latter forms a tail which increases considerably the stability of the apparatus.
The two lower planes 1 and 2 are formed each of two wings situated one on each side of the aeroplane body 7, while the top plane 3 is quite free of the top of the aeroplane body 7 to which it is fixed at its center by means of a pillar-like member 8.
dle plane. 2, shall form a tail for the other two.
The improved aeroplane has the following advantages From a constructional point of View, the
triangular frames allow of dispensing with all cross-staying and of providing a very light aeroplane.
They also allow of arranging the planes lozenge-fashion and thus considerably increase the stability of the aeroplane, the middle plane forming a tail for the other two.
From an aero-dynamicpoint of view, the narrow wings of the improved aeroplane g1ve:
(1) a high degree of eiiiciency; the supporting power of theimproved aeroplane being greater by 10 per cent. than that of a reamed Feb. 24, 11920.2,
monoplane having the same stretch of wing prising a single top supporting plane, a bottom plane made of two laterally spaced alining sections, a middle plane likewise made of two laterally spaced alining sections, a driven aeroplane body extending through the space between said sections of the middle and bottom planes, a connection between said body and the plane structure, and a triangular frame on each side of the body, connecting the top plane with the sections of the middle and bottom planes on that side in such a way that one of the planes forms a tail for the other two.
2. An aeroplane of the triplane type, comprising in combination a driven aeroplane body, a single top supporting plane, a bottom and a middle plane arranged 011 each side of the body, and a triangular frame on each side of the body, the apices of which frames connect together all of the planes in such a way that one of the planes forms a tail for the other two.
'3. An aeroplane of the triplane type comprisin a single to supporting'planqa bet- 7 tom p an'e made 0 t wo laterally spaced'alin ing sections, a middle lane likewise made of two laterally spaces I driven, aeroplane body extendingthrough the space between saidsections of the midalining sections, a
dle and bottom planes, a pillar connecting said body with the top plane and comprising 10 a plurality of members converging upside of t Wardly both lengthwise and transversely of the body and a triangular frame on each he body, connectin the top plane with the sections of the mi dle and bottom planes on that side'in such a Way thatone name to this specification.
