MEANS roneoN'rno LINernE rnoronrron or mourns SEPARATED' 11v cnnrmruenn SEPARA'I'QRSQ p r To all :whom it may concern: V.
Be it known that I, ANDERS J OHAN Euros- SON "MUNTERS, a subject of the -King of Sweden, and resident of Luntmakaregatan 7 Stockholm, in the Kingdomof Sweden, have invented "certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Controlling the Proportion of Liquids Separated in Centrifugal Separators, of'which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to means for con trolling the proportion of the liquids separated in centrifugal separators for instance the proportion of skim-milk and creamin The said means consist mounted on the outside of the neck of the drum and when shifted reduces more or less an outlet slot for one of the liquids (the skim-milk) provided in the said neck. 1
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a side view of a separator drum provided with a controlling device arranged in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the drum and the said device. Fig. 3 is a section on the line AB of Fig. 2. F ig. 4 is a detail view of the cong 6. Outside the neck of the drum a ring 8 trolling ring.
1 is the centrifugal drum and 2 is the top disk. T he'neck of thesaid disk extends upward into the neckA: of the drum. The top part of the neck 4 is somewhat narrower inside than the bottom part and fits closely to the neck 3. Between the bottom parts of the necks there is a passage 5. In the lower edge of the narrower top part of the neck I I provlded 1n the control ring.
of the drum a recess 6 is provided, which extends for some distance around the said part and leads to a peripheral slot 7 provided in the neck of the drum and having substantially the same length as the recess is rot-atably mounted, provided with a peripherical recess 9, extending only' along a part of the periphery of the ring and located outside the slot 7 in the neck of the drum.
I 10'is the ordinary central tube or the inlet tube for the full milk. 11 is a projection on the neck 8, which extends through a recess provided in the neck of the drum and fitting closely to its edges. The said projection 11 extends for a distance below the Specification of Letters r atent.
,During: the operationof the centrifugal drum "thewseparatedl skim-.milk passes upwar'dth'rough the channel 5 and leaves the q lPatented Feb. 24., 1920. Application filed December 21; 1918. Serial No. 267,878. I
drum through theslot17, while thecream passes upward through the space between the neck 8 of the top plate and the central tube 10 and leaves the separator through the opening 12. In rotatin the ring 8 it is caused to coveri the slot more or less and thus to shut ofi the outlet for the skim-milk to a greateror less extent. The proportion of the skim-milk and the cream is hereby controlled, 6. their percentage of fat. A
. dial 13 is provided on the neck of the drum,
for guidance in the adjusting of the ring 8. For the locking of the ring in adjusted position a screw 14 is in screw-threaded one gagement with the ring and engages a groove 15 extending around the neck of the I drum, so that the screw, when screwed outward for a slight distance, still engages the neck of the drum and prevents the ring from being moved axially.
Owing to the fact that the control ring, as according to this invention, is located on the outside of the neck of the drum, the manufacture of the controlling device is considerably simple and besides the ring can easily be shifted when necessary. Instead of the ring 8 any other suitable part, ro-
tatalbly mounted on theneck of the drum may be used for reducing the slot 7. A plurality of slots for the skim-milk may evidently be provided in, the neck of the drum a corresponding number of recesses being drum, the inner periphery of said drum being recessed to provide an outlet opening, a neck formed on said shoulder having an opening therein, a top disk within the drum and having a neck within the first mentioned neck and spanning the opening therein, a
projection formed on the neck of the top disk and having an outlet opening therein, and a ring surrounding said necks and projection, said ring being rotatable upon said shoulder and having a recess formed in its under side; and coaoting With the recess in said'shoulder to control the size of the open- 7 ing in accordance With the position of the ring.
2'. combination with a centrifugal drum having an outlet opening in the neck thereof, ofa ring-shaped member rotatably'mounte'd on the outer side of said neck and so arranged that by shifting the ring peripherally the said outlet opening is reduced peripherally to a greater or less extent. I
