I I Applicaton filed November of articles in many lines of industry andtrade, it is more particularly adapted for Specification of Letters Qatent.
of which the following.
Patented Feb; 24, 1920.. 10, 1915. Serial 110. 60,840.
sists in the use of slits F extendin inwardly from the contactin edges of the lers.
Said fillers A B are positioned in superposed order within the packingbox or case G as shown in Fig. 2, from which it will be noted that the top ed of filler C is in contact with the bottom e ge of filler B, whereas the bottom edge of filler C is in contact with the to edge of filler A. The slits F extend mwar y of the fillers from the contacting ed thereof, and these slits produce ieldab e tongues ada tedfor contact wit the articles to be pac breakable substances like eggs, breakable the pressure of said articles displaces the articles such as incandescent lamp bulbs, and
- perishable fruits or vegetables which are able to become injured or bruised in shipment.
The novel features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the followingndetailed description.
the
, drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a to filler and an intermediate filler,- the two llers being relatively separated in order to illustrate the slitted portions adjacent the contacting edges of the fillers when superpose a Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a portion of a packing case equipped with superposed fillers in accordance with this invention.
A, B designate fillers or cell cases adapted to be positioned at the bottom and top, respectively, of a shipping ackage, and designates an intermediate ller or cell case, any desired number of which cell cases C may be employed between the cell cases A, B. Each filler A B or C embodies strips a b.
sired number of pairs of such strips 0 d.
The pairs of strips intersect so as to form small compartments or cells D andlarger cells E. I -K The salient feature of the invention contongues so as to press the tongues into the smaller cells D; of said fi partially lers, see
I in position during the shipment of the pack- It will be noted that the articles packed in the cells E of the filler displace the tongues formed by the slits into the smaller cells D, and thus the articles cannot interfere or contact one with the other, and all the larger cells E may be used, if desired, for the reception of the articles.
Although I have shown and described each filler as comprising double strips a b and c d to produce large cells and small cells, it is apparent that slitted single strips, such C- as a, 0., may be used to the exclusion of strips 6, (I, thus resulting in single cells in the filler, all the cells being uniformin size. In view of the obviousness of this organization of single slitted strips, I have not considered it essential to illustrate the same.
Again, it is apparent that any desired number of fillers may beused in a packing ed in the fillers, whereby box or case, such as the three fillers A B of Fig. 2, it being understood that only two fillers may be used in a small package or more than four fillers used in larger'packages.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a shipping package. a filler comprising pairs of crossing attached strips forming large and small individual cells, some of said strips being slitted inwardly from their contacting edges, the slitted portions producing tongues which are yieldable under presto form yieldin ipping means at opposite sure and constitute gripping means for the edges of the ler, the yielding portions articles to be contained in the cells, whereby adapted to 've under pressure applied the pressure of the articles inserted in the thereto by ti e articles and the articles 5 larger cells dis laces the yieldable tongues adapted to be held by the yielding portions 15 partially into t e smaller cells. of superposed fillers.
2. In a shipping ackage, a filler compris-. In testimony w ereof I have hereunto ing a row of y1el able strips crossed and signed my name. forming individual cells, said strips being I 10 slitted mwardly, from their contacting edges FERDINAND KRONENBERGER.
