Description

J. C. VEIL.
HEATING AND VENTILATING SYSTEM.
APPLICATION HLED SEPT. 12. 191e.
YUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULES C. VEIL, 0F WEEHAWKEN, NEW JERSEY.
HEATING ANI) VENTILATING SYSTEM.
Application filed September To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JULES CHARLES VnrL, a citizen of the United States. and residing at No. 9 Hudson Place, VVeehawken, New Jersey, have invented new and useful Im* provements in Heating and Ventilating Systems,`of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved means for heating, Ventilating and cooling interior spaces in buildings, ships and other struetures, together with improved means whereby heating, Ventilating and cooling may be accomplished in a superior and simpler manner and with less operating expense.
I carry out my invention as hereafter described and claimeel and illustrated, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure (1) is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating features of my invention.
(2) illustrates a modification of my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The invention herein set forth is an im" provement of certain features heretofore embodied in an application tiled November 20, 1907. Serial No. 403045. allowed January 18. 1910, Patent No. 9116889.
I am aware that, prior to my invention, heating and cooling systems have been installed in which water and other mediums are circulated by means of pumps. Also that air washers are made in which the spray water is first heated before it goes into the air washer. I. therefore, do not claim as new any of the above in my invention.
(1) is a' pump operated by an electric motor (7). It electricity is not used. any other form of motive power can be used.
(6) is a heater for the purpose of heating Vthe water circulated in the.system to the desired temperature. Any oit' the present forms of hot water heaters can be used. If it is desired to cool the water instead of heating the same, any suitable refrigerating device can be used instead of the heater above described.
(26) is an indirect radiator, or other suitable form of radiator, and is used for the purpose of heating or cooling the ail before Specification of Letters Patent.
12, 1916. Serial No. 119,797.
it goes to the rooms to be heated or cooled. A ny of the present form of radiators or pipe coils can be used.
(20) is a motor operating fan (21). This motor is operated by the water, or other medium, which circulates in the system.
(2T) is an air washer provided with two sets of spray chambers (27a) and (27h). Spray chamber (27a) is connected to the pressure side of the system, while spray chamber (27h) is connected to the discharge pipe of water motor (20). Any of the present makes of air washers can be used with my system. In using the terms air Washer and spray chamber I wish it understood that this means any apparatus which heats, cools or humidifies air by means of liquids coming in direct contact with the air.
(31) is a return tank. This tank is connected to the main return line of the system. Tank is provided with a water supply from water main of building and also provided with a vent pipe for the purpose of getting rid of the air in the system. Tank may, or may not be used as desired. The system normally operates with the tank. If, however, it is desired not to use the tank, valves 18a) and (18h) are closed and valve (17") is opened.
The operation of my system is as follows Water, or any other suitable medium, is circulated by means of pump (1) through pipes (2) and (3) to heaters or coolers (6) where the water is heated or cooled to the desired degree` From there the water goes through pipes (5), (8) and (9) to indirect radiator (26). From indirect radiator (26) the water goes through pipes (10), (10), and (10b) to water motor (20). This water motor operates fan (21).v From this water motor the water goes through pipe (12) to (26) where the air is heated or cooled to the desired degree. From this indirect radiator (26) the air is 4blown through flues (29) whichconnect to the rooms which are tobe heated or cooled.
As it is desirable tovary thetemperatureand humidity of the air which is blown into q' ythe rooms by the fan, the operation of the The system is also arranged so that air washer (27h) can be omitted. In this case the water from discharge pipe of water motor (20)v is led directly t0 tank (31) without going iirstthrough air Washer (27D). This is accomplished by opening Valve (14?) i and closingjvalve (12a).
Y On certain days it maybe necessary, on
accountof atmospheric conditions, not to use the fan. In this case the water motor isshut oil by. closing lvalve (1412*), and vvalve (11%) is vOpened which. putsjair washer (27a) in commission.V In this latter arrangement thejwater leaves the pumpingdevioe and .from there it goes through radiator (26) and from` there it'goes through air'washer (27a) and theny again to pumping device (1).
. l Y In the'latter arrangement it is also pos.-
-; sible to .arrange the system so thatan eleotric motor. can be used to operate fan v(21). The system, using an electric motor, is more fully shown in Fig. (2) A of drawing.` In
this drawing (20a) is a motor operated by electricity.
On certain days, on account ot atmosphericconditions, it may be desirable not to use the heater,` or cooler (6).` In this case itis put out of commission by closingvalves (3?.)fand (4a) and openingvalve (4J).
Instead of taking thefreshair from-the outside ofthe building, as shown on draw- .ing, lit, canv be arranged to take the air from within the building'.Y
u VThe liquid which goes throughA the air washer will heat and'cool the air to a greater or lesser Vextentdepending on the temperature-of the liquid. Y
4The@motive 'power of the pump ycan-:be
` steam, gas, or` electricity. :When a steam pumpis .used the .exhaust steam' from Ysame can be used-for the. purpose of .heating vthe y liquid vwhich circulates throughvthe system.
. ,The dampers in the airconnections of the system lcan bey so-arrangedir-that,they will epee: @Mesaba da.eigenaresse which is maintained on the system. The valves on the pipe lines can be voperated in a similar manner.
When the system is in op'eration'the' active circulation obtained in the main low pipe (8) also causes a rapid circulation in the direct radiator (19).
In the drawings submitted with these specifications I only show one air washer, one indirect radiator, and one fanfouttr, I wish it understood, in the actual installation of my system, any'number of air washers, indirect radiators, or fanoutlits canfbeused.
I do not desire to be-understood as'limiting myself to the specific construction shown and described further than las specified in the claims, as it will be apparentthatthe construction mightV be modiied and changed in. Vmany ways rwithout departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Y
, What I claim-asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
