Description
A. S. TAYLOR. Improvement in Bottling Apparatus.
Witnesses Inventor %%a5m 6%4 J02 l/wu WWW @ZZQJ ii A M. PH070-LI7HOGRAFH/C co N. 1? (0550/21/53 PROCESS.) T15 ASHER S. TAYLOR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
EMPROVEMENT IN BCTTLING'APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l33,06, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER S. TAYLOR, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented Improvements in Soda- Bottles and Bottling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
It is necessary for the manufacture of sodawater and other like beverages to keep on hand alarge number of bottles to enable them to fill orders to families, groceries, saloons, and other places. These bottles are seldom returned, but are sold by the persons in Whose possession they are to junk-dealers, who again sell them to other soda men to be again filled with soda-water or other beverage.
My invention consists in constructing a bottling and corking machine to correspond with a mutilated cap or neck of the bottle, so
that the'manufacturer alone will be able to fill his own bottles. By this means I will render the bottles of no value to persons who bottle a liquid under pressure except the original manufacturer, whose machine is made to correspond with the mutilatious on the bottle.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the filling-cylinder. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of a bottle of my construction.
A represents one of that class of bottles which is intended to be filled with a liquid under pressure. On each side of the upper or' open end of the bottle I make a depression or indentation, B, as shown. One or more of these indentations can be made at different parts of the upper rim, or one or more projections could be made which will stand above the general level of the rim. 0 is the cylinder of the corking and filling machine, and d d the gage-pipes which lead into the cylinder to convey the liquid under pressure to the bottle. In order to fill the bottle A its neck is inserted in the lower open end of the cylinder 0, and its upper edge or rim pressed firmly against a shoulder, 0, so as to make a perfectly tight joint to prevent the liquid from escaping .while the bottle is being filled. In order to make a tight joint for the mutilated bottle above described, Iprovide the shoulder c with two projections, i i, opposite each other, which correspond with the indentations in the upper rim of the bottle, so that when the neck of the bottle is inserted in the cylinder it will readily find a corresponding seat, and thus preserve a perfectly tight joint.
The shoulder e and projections t i are made of lead, India rubber, or other yielding or elastic substance, so as to insure a perfect joint at all times.
In case the mutilations on the bottle consist of projections instead of depressions the seat or shoulder 6 must be made to correspond with them, as above described.
Various styles of mutilation, such as mak in g the upper end of the bottle square, oblong, triangular, or otherwise, can be devised for this purpose; and it will be a great advantage that every manufacturer can have a special arrangement of his own that will protect his trade.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bottling apparatus having an irregular lip or flange to fit irregularities of the mouth of the bottle, as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
