Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
.le it known that I, JAMns AQWHEELER, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Mangum, in the county of Greer and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loading and Unloading Devices of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loading and unloading devices especially adapted to be used upon wagons or floats and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a loading and unloading device of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which may be easily and quickly operated for effectually moving material as for instance cotton seed, maize, corn, bundle stuli', fertilizer, saw-dust, sand and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a unitary machine of the character stated means whereby it may be readily transformed from a loading device to an un loading device and vice versa.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of the loader and unloader;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the conveyer belt;
F 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the loader and unloader taken on its plane indicated by the line of Fig. 2.
The loader and unloader is here shown as arranged for use at the rear end of a wagon or float bed 1. A tube 8 has one end mounted in an opening in one side of the wagon bed and the other end mounted in an opening in a standard 2. A frame 4 1s pivotally mounted at a point between its ends upon the tube 3 and is provided at its opposite end with shafts 5 and 6 which are connected by an endless belt 10 and at one end are provided with sprocket wheels 7 and 8 respectively. Cleats 11 are mounted at spaced intervals upon the belt 10 and the outer edges of the cleats are bounded by strips 12 the edge portions of which pro e ct beyond the sides of the cleats. The sald strips and their projecting portions are adapted to encounter the material which is placed upon the belt and as the belt moves around the shaft the said material is conveyed or moved. Pulleys 13 are mounted in standards 26 at one side of the bed 1 and a shaft 14 is journaled at the front end of the wagon or float bed., A cable 15 isconnected at one end with the frame 4 and the intermediate portion of the cable is trained over the pulleys 13. The other end portion of the cable 15 is arranged to wind upon and unwind from the shaft 14. A ratchet 16 is fixed to the shaft 14 and a: pawl 17 is pivotally mounted upon the bed 1 and is adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 16 whereby the shaft 14 is held at an adjusted position. The shaft 14 is provided at one end with a crank handle 18.
Consequently it will be seen that by rotating the shaft 14 the cable 15 is moved longitudinally and therefore the frame 4 may be swung and its outer end may be raised or lowered with relation to the body of the wagon or float upon which the device is mounted.
A shaft 19 is journaled for rotation in the tube 3 andto one side of the wagon bed 1 and one end of theshaft projects beyond one end of the said tube section. The projecting end portion of the shaft 19 carries a double sprocket wheel 20 and a belt pulley 2'7 is fixed to one end of the shaft 19 and around which a belt from an engine shaft may be trained for the purpose of rotating the shaft. The wagon bed is here shown as provided on one side with a platform or bracket 28 on which the engine may be mounted.
A sprocket chain 9 is trained around the sprocket wheel 7 on shaft 5 and one of the sections of the double sprocket wheel 20 and a like chain 9 extends from the other section to the sprocket wheel 8 on shaft 6. A slack absorber 24 is mounted at the side of the frame 1 and carries one or more rollers 25 which bears against one of the runs of the chain 9 and maintain the said chain at a proper state of tension. As the shaft 19 is rotated rotary movement is transmitted by the chains to the shafts 5 and 6 and consequently the belt 10 is moved around the shafts 5 and 6.
It will thus be seen that when the wagon is to be unloaded it is simply necessary to start up the mechanism so that the cleats on the belt will pick up the material and carry it up over the outer end of the device Where it Will fall into any suitable receptacle or chute which is to receive it. When the Wagon is to be loaded the device may be moved on the tube 3 so that its outer end will engage the material to be loaded. The engine belt is then crossed to move the belt 10 into opposite direction, and thus the material will be fed into the Wagon body.
From the foregoing description taken into conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a loading and unloading device or apparatus of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be used to advantage for loading a Wagon body or float and for unloading the same and the parts are so arranged and assembled that the device may be easily and quickly transformed from a loader to an unloader and vice versa.
Having described the invention What is claimed is An apparatus of the character described comprising a Wagon bed, a frame pivotally mounted thereon means for adjusting the frame, a belt mounted for movement along the frame, a shaft journaled at the intermediate portion of the frame, means for rotating the shaft, shafts journaled at the opposite ends of the frame and around which the belt passes, a doubled sprocket wheel mounted upon the first mentioned shaft, sprocket Wheels mounted one upon each of the last mentioned shafts and chains trained around the double sprocket Wheel and the sprocket Wheels upon the last men tioned shaft.
