Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed September 9. 1918. Serial No. 253.182.
'1 '0 all u'lmm it may com-em Be it known that 1. CHARLES H. ll-AzsL- Tox, a citizen of the United States, .residillg at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electrode- Adaptcrs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to adapters or holders for electrodes of electric arc lamps. The improvement is particularly applicable to projection apparatus for motion pictures.
It is customary for this service to use pro jection apparatus which is suited for various conditions. For instance, the machinesusually are adapted for either alternating or direct current. \Vith alternating current the positive and'negiitivcelectrodes preferably are the-same size, but with direct. current 1- negativenfconsiderahly smaller diameter than the positive is used In either case prior holders are adapted to hare-huslrinfls fitted therin to take \"arious sizes of elecnodes; With-this type of Troiector adapted between them isaboaffive' inches. Conscfeeding mechanism only permits the the electrodeholders to applmich-each other until the distance for variousi kit'ids" -ofservlce,
quently-ati least-a two and onehalf; inch stub of each-olectl'mle must he thrown With 'diriicficurrent projector arc inn 9 using a small metal coated negative, it 'Oli' (l he permissible to burn the electrode to a much sllfll'ltl stuh usthc uriflame is directed a\\':| from the holder of the. negative. and my invention relates to an adapter for the negative electrode which will permit thiwithout changing the lump adjustment.
'llu- -lrlurturiof the adapter will he set forth in the following description and illustrated hy the dmwings in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal cross section of the adapter with a short. electrode stuh clumped therein.
Fig. 2 is a side view.
Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Figs. 4 and 5 are end views from the right Iand left hand sides respmtively of Fl igs 5 and 7 ii're pseudo perspective views of a detail, the former being upright and the latter invert/ed.
The, body of the adapter preferably IS made from a copper casting because the copper in addition to being a good electrical conductor also withstands the heat and the corrosive influences within the arc chamber. 'lhe major portion of the length of the casting is in the form of a tube 1 0f shch diameter that the end may bereadily fastened in the negative electr tion apparatus in lace of the electrode or the bushing which s ordinarily fitted therein. The inner diameter of the tube is only 'less than the outer diaineter that sizes of negative electrodes in ay The clamping end head 2 intehole 10. a hole 11 pl'qvl block 8. nult 1'3 is ltitted in threaded i \'l( u wit l :1 projection 14 In tcr than the threaded abuts against thc top of hlockl-i and t re projection fits in hole 11.. The block is fastents] to the end of .thc rodfby barring or riveting the end. which operation is conveniently uccom Iishcd by passing the riveting tool throug l the lower hole 5 provided for this purpose:- The adiustahle block is thus permunentl fastened to the clamping screw in an inexpensive, durable manner.
e holder of the projec- "Zide's'ttor a small iiferrthe e c n the upper 'pdrtiq'n 6 'anil' l g helo'w thif n clamping A u n-idol m t' ls paring a wing I i hol ejilfl and prqller'diain and no machining of any of the parts is necessary.
When a new electrode wt in the machine it will pass through -t etnhe and he clamped in the desired osition by turning the s rew 12 until the c cf'trode is clamped between the block 8 and the bottom of the head. The use of a special bushing for various sizes of negative is therefore elimi-- noted and the adapter thus saves the expense and inconvenience of providing bushings. As the electrode is consumed it is moved forward in the clamp and may he used until the stub is only 5 inch to 1 inch long, as
up. 5 2 shoulder at the end of tho't readed oi'tio'n shown in Fig. 1' of the drawings. The length 'of the electrode saved is about the same as the length of the adapter.
An improved result obtained by the use 5 of the ved clamping surfaces is the elimination of breakage. The electrode is clamped along several longitudinal lines or surfaces instead of at a single point.
In projection apparatus t e positive electrode is of large which makes it impractical to burn it very short, and in alternating current lamps it is impractical to burn the electrodes to very short stubs, but ob iously" my improvement need not be limited to use with negative electrode. Q
Having described my invention, what I clain. is: I i
1..In adapters for arclainp electrodes, a metal, tube adapted to be clamped at one end in Lar electrode holder to electrically connect the tube with the holder, said tubehavmg a gassa'ge therethrough for an .electrode, a
lock movably mounted in the other end of the tube and a. set serevvpassing'tlir'ough' and having a'pairof holes therein opposite the tube and engaging; the blocle/- 2. 3. In adapters for are lamp electrodes, a tube adapted to be clamped at one end in an electrode holder and having a passage therethrough for an electrode, an enlarged 40- guidc head integral yith the tube at the other end of the tube and having a hole, a clamping block movably mounted in the vuide head, and a set screw passing throu h the hole and engaging the clam mg bloc .4. In adapters .for are lamp e ectrodes, a tube adapted to be clamped at one end in an electrode holder and having a passage thercthrough for an electrode, an enlarged guide head integral with the tube at the other end of the tube and having a threaded hole and a grooved bottom opposite said hole, a clamping block movably mounted in the guide headand adapted to cooperate with the grooved bottom to hold an electrode, and a set screw fitted in thehole and enga ing the clamping block.
'5. n adapters for are lamp electrodes, a tube adapted to be clamped at oneend in an through-for an electrode, an enlarged guide head integral with the, tube at the other end to each other, a rooved clam ing block slid-. cad, and a sages screw fitted in one in itheguide head and having one end fitted in the clamping block and riveted at a point opposite the other liole in the uide headr V a .In testimony w ereof I hereunto affix niy 7o 7 CHAS.
