To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST B. THURs'roN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Control and Release Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has utility when incorporated in control and release devices, especially as an automatic lock-out of power current for elevators when an elevator door is open.

In the elevator well 1 at the'landing 2' is disposedthe slidable door 3. As the car 4 approaches the landing 2, the intercepter 5 comes into position at the nose of the dog 6. This device has special adaptation in connectionwith elevators of the so-called automatic or push button type, and embodies a safety device precluding opening of a door at any floor while the car is away, from or traveling past such floor, for should'the actuating member 7 be grasped to throw the dog6, the movement of the member 5 striking a sideof the nose of the dog 6 would rub therealong and tend to rock this dog 6. There would be no holding of the dog 6 by the member 5 as an abutment. The actuating member 7 is a lever having its fulcrum bearing 8 and the short arm 9 coacting in the'rocking of the lever to compress the yieldable means or spring 10 and thereby tending to throw the release member or latch 11 having the fulcrum bearing 12. These pivot or fulcrum bearings 8 and 12 may, in the embodiment of this device for elevator purposes, be mounted on or in a sliding door movable toward a fixed lock casing or box 13 carried by the well.
The actuating member has a lever arm 14 extending through a recess 15 of the casing 13 to engage the arm 16 of the'bell crank 20 carrying the pivot pin 21 for mounting the rockable dog 6. This dog 6 has its p0si- I tion normally maintained by the counterweight 22, .While the stability of this dog is further maintained by the coil spring 23 coacting with the lug 24ccarried by the pin 21 and the lug 25 carried by the dog. The dog is accordingly free to be rocked either up or down by the moving intercepter 5 but is normally maintained in a position to be confronted by or abut directly the intercepter 5 when the intercepter 5 is stationary and the elevator car is at a landing.
In this abutting action, any rocking of the bell crank levers'16, 18 tending to throw the pin 19 would leave the pin 21. fixed and the rocking of lever 18 would throw the arm 26 fast on the shaft 19 upward against the re-' sistance of the spring 27 from the position of this arm 26 as adjusted by the stop 28 co-.

In any rocking of this arm 30 0f the bell crank lever 30, 32, the
arm 32 is rocked away from its holding positionabov ethe latch head end of the lever 11 protruding through the opening 33 and thus engaged in the casing 13. This rocking of the, arm 32 is against the action of the 7 spring 34 from: the arm 35 of the spring poised lever having the fulcrum- 36 in the casing 13. Thisspring poised lever has its second arm 37 coacting with the spring 38 forcing this arm 37 toward the latch recess 33 in the casing '13. This coaction of the secondseries of levers 30, 32; 35, 37, is such that with'the latchll in the recess .33, the lever 35, 37, has its spring 34 acting to hold the series of levers 30, 32; 35, 3,7.

A control apparatus comprising a locl: housing, a relatively traveling'pivoted latch, said housing havinga latch seat, an actuatorcarried with the latch, movable independently of the latch and having a portion extending into the housing, a first device in the lock housing operable by the actuator independently of affecting the latch, a second device, a release member for the latch, a setting member for the release member, means for causing the first device to coact with the second device for shitting the releasemeinber into latch freeing position agalnst the resistance of the setting member until the latch is w1thdrawn, and a spring for holding the setting member inposition to be moved by the latch enteringitshousing seat.

Control apparatus including a movablelatch, a holding seat for the latch, and relatively movable release and setting members, the latter member obstructing the latch seat when the latch is out and the former member obstructing the latch seat when the latch is in to preclude latch removal therefrom.

Control apparatus including a movable latch, a holding seat for the latch, a release member movable to lock the latch in its seat, a setting member for the release member, and a spring normally urging the setting member to obstruct entrance'of the latch to its seat and coacting in such position to shift the release member away from seat obstructing position.
10. Control apparatus including a movable latch, a holding seat for the latch, a release member movable to lock the latch in its seat, a setting member for the release member, and connecting means including a spring between the members causing the setting member in latch seat obstructing position to hold the release member away from looking position.
11. Control apparatus including a movable latch, a holding seat for the latch, relatively movable release and setting members, the latter member obstructing the latch seatwhen the latch is out and the former member obstructing the latch seat when the latch is in to preclude latch removal therefrom, a switch opened by the release member, and means coacting with the setting member to retain the switch opened.
