LIFTING-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. f Patented F910;), 1920.,
Application filed April 26, 1 919. Serial'No. 292,892.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it knownthat we, LLOYD C. CRIPPEN and CHRISTIAN H. SOHLINKMEIER, citizens of the United States, residing at Parsons and Walnut, in the counties of Labette and Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following isa specification.
The invention provides a jack designed chiefly for use in connection with vehicles for lifting the wheels from the ground to admit of removal of the wheel for lubricating or other purpose or to admit of repairing or replacing a tire.
The invention provides a Vehicle jack which is quick acting and which may be reduced to compact form for convenience of carrying on the vehicle so as not to be in the way or occupy valuable space:
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure l is a side view of a vehiclejack embodyingthe invention as it appears when in service.
Fig. 2 is a top view.
Fig. 3 is a front view.
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing more clearly the manner of connecting theseveral parts. Y
Corresponding and likeparts are referred to in the following-description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The jack comprises essentially three parts, a standard A, a lifting beam B and an opcrating lever C. The standard A is approximately of A shape and consists of a single bar of metal bent into the form substantially, as indicated in Fig. 3. A cross bar a; connects the side members of the standard near their lower ends and besides form-.
engage the inner faces of the side members of the standard to which they are secured by rivets or other suitable fastenlng means.
The operating lever C is mounted upon a pin land this pin also serves as means for connecting the upper ends of the side members of the'standard A. i The shortarm of the lever C'is' provided with an open slot or notch '2 which is adapted to'receive a pin 3 at the movable end of the lifting beam B. The long arm of the lever C is of a length so that its lower end will engage the cross bar a and thereby limit the movement of the leverwhen its long-arm is swung downward into the plane of the standard when the latter is in upright position. I 1 V The lifting beam B comprises two sec tions 4 and 5 which are pivotally connected at 6, whereby to admit of the sections folding one upon the other to reduce the length of the beam. The section 4 consists of a single bar whereas the section 5 comprises companion bars which are spaced apart a distance to receive the section Land the, end
of the lever C. This is indicated most' clearly in Fig. 2,. When the sections 4: and o are extended and aline they are retained in the posltion indicated by means of the pin 6 andan element 7, the latter consisting of a metal strap extending over the upperedges of the companion bar and having their end portions bent to engage the outer faces of the bars to which they are attached by suitable fastening means. When the section 4 is extended it engages the part of the strap extendingacross the space formed between the companion bars Comprising the section 5. When the lifting beam is reduced in length the section 4 is folded so as tooccupy the space formed betweenthe corhpahion bars constituting the section 5. .The.
pin ,3 connecting the opposite ends of the companion bars, receives the notch or slot ted end of the lever G. A plurality of stops r crating lever C and the section 4 is fold-- ed between the companion bars of the I section The lever C' is folded to 00- cupy a position in the plane of the standard. The folded lifting beam may be placed against the standard, thereby occupying a small space. When the jack is set up for use the section 4 is extended and the lever 'C is adjusted to receive the pin or like faswith the ground or other surface.
tening 3 in the notch or slot 2. The standard is placed in upright position and the which the long arm of the lever C is swung downwardly agalnst the cross bar a with the result that the upper portion of the lift ing beam is elevated and lifts the part resting thereon. V
The foregoing description and thedrawing have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of our invention. It is to be understood that we may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described our inven otion, what we clalm as new and desire to selifting beam comprising two sections, one
of the sections comprising spaced companion bars, a fastening connecting the bars at one end and adapted -toienter the notch or open slot of the operating lever, a connecting element joining the opposite ends of the bars and a fastening pivotally connecting the other section with the bars of the first mentioned section, the parts being adapted to fold into compact form. In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
