To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, MARY F. LooKn'rT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark and Soot Collectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings:

This invention pertains to spark and soot collectors forengines, and has for its object the reduction of. a device to collect the spar s and soot as same are blown frpm the smoke-stacks of locomotives or other engines, and to deflect same downward. into suitable receptacles, thereby preventing the fires which ordinarily result from such sparks being projected into combustible material.

Another object is to produce such a device in a simple, practical and efficient form, best adapted to carry out the purposes intended.

With these and other objects in view, attention is called to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this application, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of my devices as attached to a locomotive engine;

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, my invention consists of a disk-like plate I mounted by means of a plurality of braces 2 over the top of the mp5. The cup 5 consists of a hollow annular ring 6 surrounding the smoke-stack 7, and fitting snugly against the smoke-stack. From the bottom of the cup 5 are downwardly extending flues 8, projecting into the spark receiving boxes 9. The apparatus is supported from the engine by means of suitable" braces as 10. Immediately over' the top of the smoke-stack and within the cage formed by the top plate 1 and the braces 2, is located a wire spark arresting cap or shell 11 made of suitable. wire screening or netting. In operation, it will be noted that when an engine isequi-pped with this device and under motion, the sparks emerging from the smoke-stack are projected against the top plate 1 and are deflected back into the cup.
