I Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tail Stretching Mechanism for Bosom-Boards; and I do hereby dec are the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the referenceni.imerals marked thereon.

My invention relates to bosom boards, with reference more particularly to the class of devices employed for ironing machinery such as used for pressing the bosom of an open front or coat shirt. Machines of this general type include a relatively movable bed and platen and means for bringing them into engagement with each other for pressing a garment arranged on the bed, and it is the purpose of the present structure to provide improved means for more adequately retaining and stretching the sections of a shirt bosom upon the supporting bed. A further object of the invention is to at ford a tail clamping or stretching means ar ranged in such a manner as to stretch the bosom of a shirt smoothly and tigh ly while at the same time permitting the two sections of the bosom to be stretched in diverging relation to each other or in slightly different directions, thereby permitting the neckband of the shirt to be retained in properly clamped position. while allowing the separation of the bosom sections and' obviating the disadvantage set up by overlapping the ad acent edges of the bosom sections. I-Ieretofore in the ironing of open bosom shirts on bosom machines, it has been customary to overlap the adjacent edges of the bosom sections and this has required the use of a supplemental ironing plate or strip interposed between the overlapping portions. for ironing the under surfaces. This has been a more or less troublesome and expensive method, and it has been proposed to retain the bosom sections together at their upper ends, that is at the neckband portion, and to separate the remaining parts by arranging them in diverging relation. however has raised the question as to how most efficiently to stretchthe bosom sections when disposed in such relation and the present structure is designed to remedy this by arranging stretching members in angular relation to each other in accordance with the angle that separates the bosomse'ctions.

In order to provide for spreading the bosom sections, the bosom board or bed 2 is of tapered formation, preferably wider at the base than at the upper end so as to permit the bosom sections to be spread, as shown in Fig. 2. Arranged at the base of the bed forcooperation therewith are the tail stretching members which are preferably arranged, each substantially at right angles to the adjacent lateral edge of the bed, or to the direction in which the corresponding bosom section is stretched. To this end the structure includes brackets 6 forming bearings for the support 7, which comprises a pair of angularly arranged portions extending on opposite sides of the center thereof. Arranged on the support are the stretching members which are preferably in the form of tubular members or rods 8, arranged for rotary and sliding movement of the support. Each tubular rod 8 carries a collar 9 having a toothed surface 10 arranged for engagement with a correspondingly toothed surface 11 formed on the bracket 6. 12 designate springs which surround the support 7 interiorly of the tubular members 8 and act to retain the members 8 normally in locked relation with the toothed surfaces 11. By this arrangement it will be seen that the stretching members occupy positions in diflerent vertical planes and serve to stretch the sections of the shirt in different directions according to the positions of the sections on the board, as illu trated in F ig. 2. The stretching members are preferably of angular cross section to enable the tail portions of the shirt to be readily wound thereon and tightly gripped in stretching or tightening the bosom sections. In the operation of the board, a shirt is placed thereon in the usual manner. the neckband being buttoned, and the neckband expanding mechanism and yoke clamping means is operated'to clamp the upper part of the shirt. The operator then stretches the bosom sections, one at a time, pulling them slightly away from the longitudinal axis of the board so that the adjacent edges of the bosom sections are spaced in diverging relationship. The tail portions are wound around the stretching rods which automatically lock in any adjusted position and hold the two sections of the shirt in stretched position until the bed and platen are brought into pressing relation to iron the bosom. The structure which I have described is intended merely as an example separating of the sections of a bosom when placed thereon.
