Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1920.
Application filed May 27, 1919. Serial N0.300,229.
I citizen of the United States, residing at lVooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dishashing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dish-washing machines, and particularly to that class which provides one or more receptacles for dishes adapted to be reciprocated within tanks of water; and its objects are, first, to provide simpler and more ellicient means for hoisting and reciprocating the receptacles; second, to provide laterally adjustable seats or tables for the receptacles; and, lastly, to provide means for actuating the reciprocating mechanism in part by motor power; all of which objects are accomplished by the devices hereinafter fully set forth and stated in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated by the accom panying drawings in 'which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts. Referring thereto, Figure 1 is a view in plan of a dish-washing machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the machine showin the hoisting mechanism partly in section; Fig. 3 is a detail view partly in section of the hoisting mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a detail form of means for reciprocating the standard.
In the drawings, A, B and C are the machine frame, Water tanks and dish receptacle, respectively, and are substantially such as heretoforevused, andmo claim is made thereto specifically. D is the upper member of the standard which forms a part of the hoisting apparatus,- and carries an arm 1 as a crane from which the dish recep tacle C is removably suspended by a suitable cord or chain 20, and has a toothed rack 2 secured thereto longitudinally, and is provided with an anti-friction pulley 3 at its lower end, as shown in Fig. '2.
E is the middle and lower member of the standard, preferably tubular, and of a size large enough to admit said upper member D within its bore loosely so as to freely reciprocate endwise therein. A longitudinal groove 15 is out therein of suflicient width and length to permit said rack 2 to reciprocate freely therein from end to end of said rack.
A- gear supporting band or collar F is secured around the top of the said larger member, and a pinion 8 is mounted therein, and adapted to engage the teeth of said rack within said groove 15, said pinion being op erable by the hand crank 9 upon its extended shaft. An anti-friction pulley 7 is also mounted in said collar above said pinion, as shown in Fig. -l. and is adapted to bear against the adjacent side of said upper member, to reduce fr ction r saidpoint, and a dog 6 is fitted thereto so as to hold member D in elevated position, at pleasure.
A bottom end portion I ofsaid member- E is fitted to reciprocate within and through a support 10 secured to said tanks, or otherwise, a limited distance, as shown in Fig. 4. This reciprocation is accon'lplished ordinarily by means of the hand lever G, which is pivotally mounted On a support 12 near the base of the machine frame A by pivot 9 1a lateral arm 5 of said lever G is adapted to pivotally engage the lower end of said member I by means of a vertical strap 4, and is resiliently held in position elevated by a spiral spring J connected thereto and to the upper part of said frame, as shown in Fig. 4.
Means are also provided for actuating said standard vertically by motor power, if desired. I accomplish this by substituting for said hand lever and its connections, the horizontal bar H, which is mounted on a pivot 71 on support 11, and its'short end connected to said strap 4-, either in connection with, or independently of said'hand lever arm 5, and its outer end is provided with a slot 18 adapted to operatively engage a shaft 17 and motor driven mechanism K, in a well known way.
Receptacle seats L L are mounted at one or both ends of the frame A, and adapted to swing laterally on rotary posts 14, as shown in Fig. 1, and may be made of any desired shape or size; and a drainage orifice 13 permits the drip from the receptacle C to escape into the adjacent tank. Their rotary movement is useful for shifting them to any desired lateral position to accommodate the desired position of the receptacle, andprovides convenient room for placing either Washed or unwashed dishes thereon for handling.
The washing operation is asfollows: Unwashed dishes, being properly placed in the receptacle C, the latter is elevated and swung into position immediately above either-.of the tanks by the rotary move ment of the crane 1J, and then lowered into the tank by operating the hand lever 9, the dog 6 having been lifted for this urpose; the hand lever G is swung to the left in Fig. l by Weight of the receptacle upon the member E, by means of the connecting link 4 and the lever arm 5. The receptacle may then be moved up and down in the Water a limited distance by operating the hand lever G, until the dishes are thoroughly cleaned, when it is again elevated by said lever and locked in said position by a fastener 16, whereupon the receptacle may be elevated to a point above the tank, and swung sidewise to rest upon one or the other of said seats L, as aforesaid.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a dish-Washing machine, the combination with a frame, Water tanks mounted in said frame, and a receptacle for dishes in relation thereto; of a hoisting and laterally shifting and vertically reciprocating mechaarm adapted to swing sidewise thereon oversaid frame, said standard made of two parts, the upper part adapted to reciprocate vertically in the l'owerpart a limited distance, means for reciprocating said upper part in said loWer part, and thereby lengthening and shortening said standard, and means for manually reciprocating vertically said entire-standard a limited distance, substantially as. set forth.-
