oZZ MILO/)7, '2 may concern Be it known that I, snrrr ll. BENNOR, izen of the United States, residing at M "on, in the county of Bibb, State of Georgia have invented certain new and use improvements in Package Tie Devices, of which the following a description, reference beino had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates t package tie devices and more particularly to a button tached to the end of coil so that the cord may be wrapped around the package and about the button to hold the package securely.
fine of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved tie or button which will effectively lock the cord in tying position around the package.
A furth r object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character described including a plurality of knobs which automatically lock the cord in tying position.
A further object of the invention is to produce an improved tie or button including a plurality of spaced depending knobs which operate to raise the face of the tie from the upper face of the packs/ e so that the cord may be more easily passed under the tie during the tying operation.
Still another feature of this intention resides in providing such construction with an upturned peripheral flange whereby the cord is guided toward the base of the tie and is more easily directed under the same duringthe tying operation.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings, WllCll show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a package;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tie or button;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section thereof, and
Fig. i the perspective view of the button itself.
In general the tie comprises a dished or button-like structure of sheet metal or other substance, formed with central raised portion or dome perforated to receive the end of a cord. This raised portion at its base is Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Gctchei. 26, 1.8 19. Serial No. 331,8?4.
provided with a laterally extending circumierential rim terminating in a periphe all upturned flange. At spaced intervals the rim is indented to provide a series' iof depending knobs. l 1
The improved tie comprises a dished or button-like structure including a central raised portion or dome 1, perforated, preferably at its central portion 2, to receive a knotted end of a cord 8. At its base this dome portion extends into a peripheral transverse rim d, terminating in a circumferential downwardly extending flange 5. At suitably spaced intervals this rim 4: is incented or otherwise provided with a plural ity of downwardly depending knobs 6.
It will, of course, be evident that this tie in ybe made of sheet metal or other substance; that the present invention is not limited to the exact shape and construction above described except in so far as it isliniited by the terms of the attendant claims. The function and operation of the device will be evident upon inspection of Fig. 1.
In use the device is placed on top of the package or other article to be held, the depending knobs 6 resting on the upper face thereof. The cord is then passed around the package, thence about the under face of the tie, the rip-turned flange 5 serving to guide the cord downwardly under the depending knobs 6 which automatically lock the cord as the same passes thereunder. The cord is then passed about the package in a direction transverse to its former turn and is then again Wound under the tie or button, the depending lugs further acting to automatically hold'the 0 rd in tying position.
It will be seen that a device constructed as above presents a very simple structure in which the central raised dome affords a simple means of anchoring the end of the cord and the depending knobs, not only permitting the circumferential rim d to be raised from the upper face of the package to facilitate the entrance of the cord thereunder, but they also provide a series of look ing lugs which straddle or engage the opposite sides of the transversely arranged strands of cord so that the horizontal plane of the rim 4: rests on the plane of the cords and the depending knobs 6 project below such plane, thus providing a very secure locking effect. In addition the lip-turned flange 5 presents a deflecting surface which directs the cord to the base of the button and under the depending knobs 6 when the cord is passed around the tie.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having described the invention, .What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A package tie device comprising a sheet metal disk having a perforated dome formed With alaterally extending rim and an up standing circumferential flange, a plurality of spaced knobs projecting downwardly from the underside of said rim.
A package tie device comprising a dished plate or button provided with a cord attached adjacent the center thereof, the peripheral edge of said button having spaced, depending lugs.
3. A package tie device comprising an apertured raised portion having a peripheral upturned flange and a series of spaced, depending lugs intermediate said flange and raised portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH N. BENNOR.
